It was agreed that weighing of boats would occur first followed by consideration for need for changing minimum weights in the S80 Class Rules.Meeting Closed at 19:58President’s Report 2018/19In 1977 the first S80 came out of the moulds. The design proved hugely popular and it was only a short time before orders were placed and a fleet was formed on the Swan River, sailing predominantly out of EFYC. With that came the formation of the S80 Yacht Assoc of WA and most likely the first AGM. This AGM then marks 42 years of S80s in Western Australia, a history that probably only resonates with sailors and more specifically S80 sailors, but at the same time it’s a history of a class of like minded people who have come together every summer and some winters, to share the fun and excitement of this one-design yacht. It is important to once in a while reflect on this history and the people who made it happen. People are central to this Class and are the only reason this association lives on. In the last year we have continued to keep the dream alive and have worked hard to do this. We have continued to serve our objectives to promote the Class through sound governance, promotion of participation and the encouragement of competition. I would like to be able to say we have achieved net growth, but this achievement continues to elude us.The S80 committee this year was comprised of Richard Koedyk – Hon Secretary, Tony Strickland – Hon Treasurer, Annette Koenders – Vice President, the late Wally Philippe, Gavan Jones, Jen Richardson and Phil Slee. Mark Gooding joined us later in the year and Dean Motteram was co-opted. John Berry served ex-officio as Class Measurer. Thanks to those of you who have contributed to the operation of the S80 Association. I would also like to record my thanks to our core group of on-water volunteers - Pamela Strickland, Anna Klyne, Kingsley Piesse, Fons and Phillippa Berkhout, Gerry Brennan, John Hassen and Ian Ball. We could not do it without them.Richard Koedyk has done an outstanding job over three years, not only as secretary, but as social media sage, drone captain, photographer, spiritual guide and counsellor. As a non-sailor he has been able to focus on important detail in the way of process, strategy and provide a business focus. Thank you Richard for your patience and guidance. Once again this year the Assoc is in a good financial position as you will see from statements to be tabled tonight by our Treasurer. Budgets have been closely managed and Tony Strickland has applied thorough accounting practices with clear reporting presentations at every meeting. I would like to thank Tony for his 3 years as Treasurer and for his great guidance, knowledge and ability. We will not be recommending an increase in fees for the coming year.I would like to comment on some notable events this year. The Annual Legends Day Race was sailed at SoPYC on Wednesday 28th November 2018 and was taken out by Simon Cunningham sailing Fusion in brisk conditions. We had 23 S80s on the line in yet again a spectacular celebration of S80 yachts and sailors with around 100 of them joining the on & off water celebrations. Legends Day has attracted National interest with the Victorians wishing to imitate our success. The Grand Piano 100 Club raised over $8000 net in funds towards the cost of maintaining Grand Piano for the foreseeable future. The GP 100 Club was an initiative of Wally Philippe. The inaugural S80 South West Championship Regatta was sailed at KBSC over the Australia Day long-weekend. A group of 17 S80 sailors from Perth joined the guys & girls at KB sailing a fleet of 8 boats. KBSC’s Phil Slee and his team sailing Miss Behavin were the inaugural championship winners and everyone voted the weekend a huge success. There are great expectations of bigger and better to come. Four visiting teams from Koombana Bay SC joined us again this year in the March State Championships. These guys and girls have breathed new life into our States and are always welcome. KBSC skipper Phil Slee and his team on Miss Behavin took out the championship on his 3rd attempt in 3 years. The consistency went to John Guhl sailing Surcouf. In February this year our great mate Wally Philippe passed away. As owner of S80 Front Up for 18 years, Wally was a keen supporter of the S80 fleet and was active on the S80 committee for much of that time. A true gentleman and sportsman, we celebrated Wally’s life with a sail past out of SoPYC on the afternoon of 6th April – Front Up sailed by John Hassen won the day.The Ron Tough Match Racing Regatta was sailed on Saturday 11th May at Crawley. This was Phil Slee’s trifecta, taking out first place sailing Grand Piano in a tightly fought contest against Bill Quin sailing Fusion. After some setbacks and negotiation, the S80 Sailor Development Programme got underway in June. The programme, using Grand Piano as a training platform, provide a much needed progression for those who have completed club based keelboat helm and crew courses and wish the develop their sailing skills to be “race-ready” and advance to skipper. The first group of 11 trainees have completed the major 3 course modules, with a number progressing to skipper training. The realisation of the programme is a tribute to the efforts, skills and tenacity of Tony Strickland, the programme principal. Coaching assistance has also been provided by S80 skippers and crews. For the last several weeks S80 skippers and crews have been investing their time and efforts into supporting “Blind at See” - Kylie Forth, Erin McGlew, Colin Harrison and Todd Back in their bid to compete in the Blind Sailing Worlds in Kingston Ontario. The 2019/20 Season Schedule has been finalised and published on our website. This coming year’s calendar will feature JaM racing as part of the regular Saturday fleet races – an initiative designed to support short-handed boats. But that forms part of next year’s report!Thank you to everyone for your support during the past year.Jeff CrookesPresident12 August 2019Financial Statements:2018/19 Race Program:Citation by Gavan Jones in support of motion (see 5F) for Honorary Life Membership for Jeff Crookes:I move that Mr Jeffrey Crookes be made a Life Member of the S80 Yacht Association of WA.Jeff commenced sailing S80 yachts at Royal Perth Yacht Club in 1988 when he joined David McDermott and the crew on Windmill. After a couple of seasons with Dave at the helm, Jeff defected to join Shadowfax and then later he switched to Division 2, sailing with Wayne Mann on Beagle. The calling of the S80 yachts was too great; he and Bob Hay returned to the S80 fleet after they bought a share of Windmill in 2004, a yacht then campaigned, with John Berry up until the end of this season. As you are aware, the syndicate has now purchased Fusion.Jeff has always been a strong supporter of S80 sailing in Western Australia, not only as an avid sailor but also as a devoted administrator of the S80 Association. Jeff took over as secretary of the Association in 2010 and has held the position of President since 2014 (albeit with one season as Vice President).Jeff has guided the Association where it is the most organised and respected Association on the river. With his positive attitude and devotion to sailing Jeff has forged relationships with our S80 cousins in Victoria and New South Wales; he has promoted the strong relationships and interaction with Koombana Bay and Perth based clubs; all of which have benefitted S80 sailing in WA.In an effort to improve sailing participation Jeff has been instrumental in developing a number of different initiatives; these include the introduction of the Legends Day, a pivotal day in our racing calendar; he has overseen the development of the Grand Piano S80 training program; he has promoted the introduction of a combined jib and main fleet to Saturday racing for this coming season; early indications are this will see more boats both at the start and finish lines each week.Jeff’s dedication to S80 sailing is relentless; he can be seen engaging with our volunteers and skippers firming up their participation months in advance; his attention to detail and knowledge of running events is daunting: if you ask him, he can tell you how many onions are required the State Championships.Jeff is a strong advocate for S80 sailing; his devotion and foresight has put the Association in a strong position going forward. With the Committee’s support, I move that Mr Jeffrey Crookes be made an Honorary Life Member of the S80 Association of Western Australia for outstanding services he has rendered to the Association over many years.Citation by Jeff Crookes in support of motion (see 5G) for Honorary Life Membership for Tony Strickland:I move that Anthony Michael (Tony) Strickland be made a Life Member of the S80 Yacht Association of WA.If certain individuals were born to sail, you could put the name of Tony Strickland pretty close to the top of the list!Tony began sailing dinghies and catamarans at about 9 years of age in Darwin. Apart from a time when he obviously had some misguided notions about power craft, he has not been far from a sailing boat since those early beginnings.Between 1987 and 2001 Tony sailed extensively in offshore events, including 3 Sydney to Hobart Races and 2 Fremantle to Lombok events. In 1998, after 10 years of Ocean Racing, he and Pamela bought an S80 from RFBYC and they joined RPYC. The boat was called DARUKA. The hull was Red and because he and Pamela both like a drop of red and both were of a certain vintage, the boat became VINTAGE RED.Tony immediately joined the S80 Association and at his first meeting at RPYC came across Dennis Hill, Simon Plunkett, Gary Griffiths, Les Marshall and Rupert Leslie.Tony took a position on the S80 committee and then in 2003 became President for the first time.? Those were the days when 20 – 25 boats would show up on the line at the States.? During this time he lifted the profile of the S80’s considerably in Club racing and the State Regatta went from strength to strength.? He became President again for a term around 2010 and has served in various capacities on the Committee ever since.? With his enthusiasm, no-nonsense style, depth of knowledge and networks, Tony was a good fit for the task of preparing the yearly programme and for that matter any job you care to mention. For the last 3 years Tony has served as Treasurer. In the 12 years prior to his retirement from full-time work, Tony worked for YWA where managed and delivered instructor training and Safety & Sea Survival courses for keelboat instructors. He was responsible for establishing YWA as a Registered Training Organisation and recruited and trained a State-wide network of 120 RST Assessors. Since 2000 Tony has been a keelboat Instructor at RPYC and a volunteer mark layer since 2008. Sailor training, mentoring and support seemed to take on the form of a passion for Tony. During his ownership of Vintage Red Tony recruited, trained and mentored many young (and not so young) crew members, many of whom are now extremely competent sailors. For the last 8 years Tony has been coach and champion for blind sailors Kylie Forth and Erin McGlew in their Blind at Sea campaigns – first at Lake Garda in 2011 and currently preparing them for Lake Ontario next month. Following the purchase by the Assoc of Grand Piano 2017, Tony immersed his energies into thinking through and finally, after some frustrating setbacks, established the S80 WA Sailor Development Programme. A programme that is attracting much interest with some 12 trainees progressing through the first modules.Tony is passionate about sailing, fascinated with training and enthusiastic about getting people involved in sailing at whatever level.? His energy is without limits and his sense of humour legendary. He applies himself diligently at any task and has an eye for detail and precision. These qualities were without doubt, front of mind when he was recently nominated and appointed unopposed to the position of Captain Sail at RPYC.Tony is a born manager and for this reason seems to find himself on various committees. Other than sailing and sail-training, he is passionate about aircraft, passenger airlines, volunteering, football, model making, his grand children and Pamela – but I’m not sure which order these come!I have it on authority that he misses having his own boat dreadfully but compensates by jumping on any boat looking for a skipper and being the biggest ‘boat tart’ around.? He doesn’t miss the pen fees, buying sails and the maintenance required to run a boat though.Members, Tony Strickland is a deserving candidate for Life Membership of the S80 Association of WA. ................
