Topic: Communities in our World

GLO: Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how geographic, social and linguistic factors affect quality of life in communities in India, Tunisia, Ukraine and Peru.

SLO: 3.1.2 Examine the social, cultural and linguistic characteristics that affect quality of life in communities in other parts of the world by exploring and reflecting upon the following inquiry- What are traditions, celebrations, stories and practices in the communities that connect the people to the past and to each other?

Students will:

1. Identify a celebration in Ukraine

2. Compare that celebration to our own

Materials: Letter from Sasha, paper, pencil

Activity 1: With students on the carpet, open the letter from Sasha. (Letter is written telling students about how he celebrations Christmas in Ukraine). Have students take turns reading parts of the letter (Ukrainian words- use google translator). Brainstorm some of the similarities we have and some of the differences.

Activity 2: Have students write a letter back to Sasha explaining how they celebration Christmas and acknowledge Sasha’s letter. Students will do a draft on a piece of paper.

Review noise/volume meter.

Activity 3: As students are finishing they will video themselves or each other on the iPad reading their letter to Sasha. We will watch these at the end of the day.

Closure: Tell your elbow partner one thing your liked about today and one thing you learned from today.

Management: Give me 5, Meet me on the carpet in 10, 9, 8…, Volume Meter, Video to engage students
