WHEREAS: Ann was born in Boston on December 3, 1939 to Irish immigrant parents and grew up in Cambridge, where she graduated from Matignon High School; and

WHEREAS: Ann was a community activist with special interests in affordable housing and healthcare; she was also a talented artist; and

WHEREAS: Ann served for 27 years as the parent coordinator at Graham and Parks School, and the parent liaison positions that are now a universal feature of Cambridge Schools are based on the job she created, starting as a parent volunteer; and

WHEREAS: Ann's passing will leave a void in the lives of all her surviving family, her husband Frank X. Bolger; her children Erin, Sean, Mairin, Sheilah and Colleen Bolger; her sister Margaret Umanzio; and her seven grandchildren; and

WHEREAS: The City of Cambridge is committed to improving air quality and reducing traffic congestion because of concern about the levels of automobile travel and congestion and; and

WHEREAS: The City of Cambridge is encouraging the implementation of Transportation Demand Management (TDM) as a means of improving the environment and quality of life by encouraging the use of transportation options (walking, cycling, ridesharing, public transit); and

WHEREAS: The business community plays an important role in implementing TDM and many Cambridge businesses have already implemented a variety of TDM measures for their employees; and

WHEREAS: It is important to recognize these TDM efforts which have significant positive impact on Cambridge residents and the employees of these companies; and

WHEREAS: Forest City Enterprises, developer of University Park, a prominent mixed-use development located Sidney Street near Central Square, has approximately 50 employees in Cambridge; and

WHEREAS: Forest City Enterprises provides a variety of programs to encourage the use of transportation options, including a public transit subsidy of up to $100, reserved carpool parking, provisions of bicycle parking, showers and changing areas, partnership in shuttle services to MBTA stations and other area businesses, and membership in the Charles River Transportation Management Association; and

WHEREAS: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the world's leading universities and a very important member of the Cambridge community, is located along the Charles River and has over 7,000 employees in Cambridge; and

WHEREAS: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a leader in implementing trip reduction programs, including a significant public transit pass subsidy for both employees and students, a variety of shuttle services, a preferential and discounted carpool parking program, extensive bicycle facilities and an annual transportation fair to promote transportation options; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City awards FOREST CITY ENTERPRISES the GoGreen Business Award in the small business category, and be it further

WHEREAS: Lesley University's Say Yes To Education Program will hold a celebratory end-of-year event on Wednesday June 20, 2001; and

WHEREAS: The Say Yes Program was conceived by philanthropist George Weiss who, in 1991, committed to pay college tuition for an entire class of then-third-graders at the Harrington School in Cambridge; and

WHEREAS: The Say Yes to Education is a non-profit, comprehensive college tuition-guarantee program that aims to help inner-city students build productive lives by preparing them for college or advanced vocational training.

WHEREAS: Preparing inner-city youths for college is a complex and challenging task, requiring a long-term commitment to children’s development, multi-disciplinary interventions and extensive resources and it involves working with entire families, not just individual students; and

WHEREAS: The Say Yes to Education works as a four-way partnership between the Say Yes Foundation and local sponsors, Lesley University, the students and their families, and the Cambridge Public Schools; and

WHEREAS: Lesley University has coordinated this program by working closely with the students and their families to ensure their academic and social success; and

WHEREAS: The Say Yes to Education program director Professor Anne Larkin, program coordinator, Doctor Jose Ribeiro, and program manager Barbara Ulm have spent countless hours providing academic support, counseling and enrichment activities to these students; and

WHEREAS: Lesley University President Margaret McKenna has been a strong and consistent supporter of this program; and

WHEREAS: As a result of this program, many young men and women who otherwise might never have contemplated higher education will become first-generation college students in the fall; now therefor be it

RESOLVED: That this City Council congratulate the 49 participants in the Say Yes to Education Program who graduate from High School as members of the class of 2001 and wish them all the success they deserve as they head on to further their education; and be it further

RESOLVED: That this City Council thank George Weiss for his visionary decision to support these students and to contribute so much to our community; and be it further

RESOLVED: That this City Council thank Lesley University for its commitment to this program and thank all of those teachers, parents, family members and student advocates who have made this program a success; and be it further

WHEREAS: The Elder Service Plan of the Cambridge Health Alliance provides, coordinates and manages a comprehensive system of the highest quality medical care and services in order to maintain the health, dignity, autonomy, quality of life, functional ability an independence of frail, older adults so they may remain in their own home and in their own community; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Elisabeth Broderick has been the primary physician at the Elder Service Plan of the Cambridge Health Alliance for three years; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Broderick during her time of service has provided care to the programs 125 participants, as well as other geriatric patients in The Cambridge Health Alliance service area; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Broderick will be relocating to Milwaukee in July and will be sorely missed by all at the Elder Service Plan; and

WHEREAS: On Wednesday, June 27, 2001 there will be an Annual Caregivers Appreciation as well as a Farewell Breakfast for Dr. Broderick, held at 270 Green Street from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: In the year 2001, the month of September has been declared Prostate Cancer Awareness Month; and

WHEREAS: In the year 2001 approximately 198,100 men in the United States will learn that they have prostate cancer, and across the nation prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed nonskin cancer in men; and

WHEREAS: Approximately 31,500 men will lose their lives to this disease in 2001, and one in six men in the nation are at risk of developing prostate cancer during their lifetime; and

WHEREAS: It is known that about 25 percent of prostate cancer occurs in men under the age of 65 during their prime work years, and at any age prostate cancer devastates families through loss of income, partnership, and support; and

WHEREAS: Prostate cancer leaves too many parents, women, children and other family members without a man they love, and African American families are disproportionately affected due to African American men having the highest prostate cancer incidence and mortality rates in the world; and

WHEREAS: Prostate cancer has accounted, on average, for 15 percent of the nation’s cancer burden and 15 percent of male cancer deaths, but the disease has received, on average, only about 5 percent of the funds this nation commits annually to cancer research; and

WHEREAS: Research suggests that men could reduce their risk of prostate cancer mortality if they followed recommended prostate cancer screening guidelines, including, examination by a health care provider and increased awareness and use of early detection practices; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That this City Council proclaim September 2001 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Cambridge, and urge all men in our community and throughout the country to become aware of their own risks of prostate cancer, talk to their health care providers about prostate cancer, and, whenever appropriate, get screened for the disease; and be it further
