THE STORYLINE

Montana State faces the new verse of a familiar song Saturday, when a talented squad from the Southland Conference visits Bobcat Stadium. Central Arkansas may be a firsttime Bobcat foe, but the Bears bring a first-rate squad to Bobcat Stadium on Saturday. Known for its purple-and-gray striped field, UCA is even better known for football success. Since moving to Division I in 2006 the Bears have claimed two Southland titles and three nine-win seasons. The team's 2013 season was derailed by injuries, a theme familiar to Bobcat fans, but like MSU four UCA offensive linemen return in 2014. Taylor Reed averages 153.0 yards a game through the air and 47.5 on the ground through two games, with returning all-league receiver Dezmin Lewis standing as a big-play threat.

MSU vs. Central Arkansas

The Series Montana State's meeting with Central Arkansas on Saturday marks the first ever between the schools.

UCA History Lesson Central Arkansas has become a perennial FCS Playoff contender, a rapid ascent for a program that less than a decade ago was a Division II school. The Bears, a three-time NAIA National Championship program, upgraded to NCAA Division II in 1993 and to the FCS in 2006. Central Arkansas has suffered through just one losing season in the last decade. The program's NFL players include long-time pro linebacker Monte Coleman.

Bobcats and the Southland Montana State has a lengthy history against the Southland Conference, both in its current configuration and historically:

Offensive Notes

After picking up only 10 first downs in the team's season opener at Arkansas State, the fewest by a Bobcat team since Rob Ash's first squad in 2007, the Cats piled up 29 in the home-opening win over Black Hills State. That total was MSU's most since getting 30 against Eastern Washington a year ago.

The Bobcats managed a stark statistical contrast in another area on Saturday, as well. After gaining 86 rushing yards at Arkansas State, the lowest single-game total for MSU since 2011 (UC Davis, 70, and EWU, 67), the Bobcats piled up 371 rushing yards against Black Hills State last weekend. That was the 10th-highest single-game total in school history.

In his first career start, Dakota Prukop threw for 142 yards, the exact same number as Kelly Bradley's passing total in his first career start against Fresno State in 1983. In his second start, Prukop rushed for 176 yards, the most by a Bobcat quarterback in history.

After breaking into the receptions column for the first time in his career at Arkansas State with six, Mitch Griebel held onto his team lead by adding five last weekend against Black Hills State.

While the yardage total isn't eye-popping, Montana State's efficiency throwing the ball in the first two games of 2014 has been. The Bobcats have completed 70.5 percent of its passes through two games, 36-for-51, with two interceptions and two touchdowns.

In 39 games on Bobcat Stadium's FieldTurf surface, Montana State has averaged 425.6 yards of offense (16,599 total) per game, and 33.0 points (1,288 total points). The turf was donated by MSU's 1984 National Championship team, which featured Hunter Mahlum's father (Tom Mahlum), Nate and Mac Bignell's father (Joe Bignell), and Trace Timmer's father and uncle (Kirk and Troy Timmer).

Defensive Notes

Linebacker Alex Singleton logged a career-high 19 tackles against SUU last November, the highest single-game total of the season in the Big Sky and the most by a Bobcat since his position coach Kane Ioane had 21 tackles against NAU in 2003. Safety Rob Marshall set his career high in the 2014 season opener against Arkansas State with 12.

Montana State has recorded two takeaways in each of the first two games. The Bobcats recovered two Arkansas State fumbles, one of which was a punt that set up MSU's only touchdown. MSU recovered one fumble and picked off a pass against Black Hills State. Bryson Keeton's interception set up MSU's second score against the Yellow Jackets.

In Bo Beck's seven-plus seasons coaching Montana State's defensive line, seven Bobcat D-linemen have registered interceptions. That includes the 57-yard pick-six by Craig Ashworth vs. Monmouth and Brad Daly's unlikely tip-and-pick at UNC this season.

The Bobcats now stand 18-0 under Rob Ash when scoring on defense (TD or safety), 11-2 when scoring on kick teams.

Kick Team Notes

Trevor Bolton's 25-yard run for a first down out of punt formation against Arkansas State marked the second such conversion of his career. In 2012, Bolton scampered 23 yards for a first down in Montana State's win over North Dakota.

Redshirt freshman Luke Daly becomes the first kicker without varsity experience to hold that job at MSU since Jason Cunningham in 2008. Here is a look at Bobcat place kickers in their starting debuts during the Rob Ash era:

Date Player vs. Opp

FG PAT

8/30/14 Luke Daly at Ark State

1-2 1-1

9-8-12 Rory Perez at Drake

0-0 4-5

8-30-08 Jason Cunningham vs. Adams St 1-1 8-8

9-1-07 Eric Fisher at Texas A&M

0-3 1-1

9-15-07 Mike Sweeney vs. Dixie State 1-1 8-8

Bobcat opponents blocked three extra points in 2013, and in addition to a PAT Northern Colorado also got to a field goal and a punt. Black Hills State recorded the first opponent block against the Cats this season, getting a PAT in game two.

Montana State has converted its only two-point conversion try of 2014, a rush by Mitch Griebel. The Bobcats were successful on nine conversions out of the swinging gate formation last season - fourfor-six on rushes, and five-for-six on pass tries. Before 2013, MSU's last successful two-point conversion attempt came when current Bobcat receivers coach Cody Kempt connected with Derek Green on a two-point pass in 2007.

MSU kicked on its first PAT try of the 2014 season, with Luke Daly converting. There was a time early in 2013 when MSU had scored more points on two-point conversions than conventional PATs. MSU has now kicked 34 extra points, while converting nine two-point tries for 18 points.
