Course Selection – Please list 8 -10 courses you wish to take during your exchange program at UMASS Dartmouth. If any of these courses are required as part of your degree requirements please make sure to note this next to the specific course title. The selected courses are not guaranteed and are subject to availability. A full semester load of courses for undergraduate students is 12 credits and for graduate students is 9 credits. You must maintain these minimum course-load levels for the duration of your study at UMASS Dartmouth. Each UMass Dartmouth course typically qualifies for 3 credits. NOTE: Undergraduate courses are numbered 0-499, graduate courses 500 and above in the Course Catalog.

Housing Options – Exchange students are strongly recommended to live on campus. Distances are long and public transportation is very limited. Should an exchange student decline to make arrangements for on-campus housing they are fully responsible for finding and organizing their own off-campus arrangements. The university does not take responsibility. After a student has been accepted and provided an id number, they should contact the Housing & Residential Education office to make arrangements to live on campus: housing@umassd.edu

The following web site provides students with full year rates. (Note rates are subject to change.) Meal plans are available at additional cost.

Personal Statement — Enclose on a separate sheet a Personal Statement in which you state concisely your personal and academic objectives, research/creative/career interests and experience, and any work experience. Describe the emphases and subjects you hope to study while at UMass Dartmouth.

CV — Enclose your Curriculum Vitae or resume' on a separate sheet.

Academic Record/Transcript — Enclose with your application an official transcript with cover letter stating conversion to cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. It should list specific subjects studied, dates of study, grades received, and degrees received.

Recommendation Letter — Enclose a Letter of Recommendation (in English) from a professor of the home university. (Note that the academic department may in some cases ask for supplemental materials after reviewing the initial application.)

Financial Support Documents — Although the exchange agreement gives you specific financial benefits, there will still be some costs that you must cover yourself. Please list your source(s) of financial support for those costs and provide an official statement from the bank certifying the current balance of the account. If the account is in a parent or sponsor's name (not in the student's) a letter from that person must be attached stating that the funds are available to the named student.

English Language Proficiency Assessment: Minimum 550/213/79 (PBT/CBT/IBT) on the TOEFL (or equivalent) An exchange application will not be considered complete until one of the following is provided:

The United States Department of State requires J-1 students to have “sufficient proficiency in the English language, as determined by an objective measurement of English language proficiency, to successfully to participate in his or her program and to function on a day-to-day basis." [22 CFR 62.11(a)(2)]

➢ Certification by a language test recognized by UMass Dartmouth’s graduate admissions. A copy of the test score is provided.

• The test must have been taken within the past 2 years

• TOEFL test score must be 550 (paper based), 213 (computer based) or 79 (internet based iBT)

• Or IELTS 6.5

➢ Certification by an academic institution or English language school (including institutions where English is the primary language of instruction). A copy of the letter or diploma is attached.

• Verifies the exchange visitor possesses English language proficiency high enough to function daily within the UMass Dartmouth position and within the local U.S. community

• Issued on sending institution official letterhead in English

• Includes name, title, signature of a faculty member in the institution’s Department of English Language.

Other requirements: In the case of some academic departments, applicants may be asked to submit additional materials before an acceptance decision is made.
