KILKENNY POETRY BROADSHEET 9 - LAUNCH

The Arts Office of Kilkenny County Council is delighted to announce the publication of the ninth issue of the very popular Kilkenny Poetry Broadsheet. The aim of the publication is to give local writers a platform for their work.

This years editor is Yvonne Cullen. Yvonne was born and lives in Dublin. Her first collection of poems, ‘Invitation to the Air’ won the American Ireland fund award at Listowel Writers' Week. Published in 1998, it received the following praise: "A gifted poet" (John Burnside), 'A world of atmosphere and filament' (Kerry Hardie), and 'Poetry which needs to be read' (Howard Wright, Poetry Ireland). Since then, publications in which Yvonne's poems have appeared have included the New Irish Poets anthology (Bloodaxe Books), the Irish Times, Poetry Ireland, The White Page anthology, and, recently, ‘Our Shared Japan’ from Dedalus Press. Yvonne is also an established creative writing teacher. In 2006, she edited the anthology 'All Good Things Begin,' which gathered the work of more than forty of her adult students, many of whom are now going on to make their own names as writers.

One hundred and eight poems were submitted for inclusion by forty one writers with sixteen poems by thirteen writers selected. Editor Yvonne Cullen says ‘Reading the work submitted, I had a wonderful sense of the whole of the County it came from. It was a really lovely experience to enter a region like that, via the contents of a large manilla envelope, and that was truly how it felt. A sense of getting into a seam, and of experiencing the county deeply by way of that seam running through it, that creative layer. And so, I tried to choose poems for the broadsheet in such a way as to pass on that experience I had. And with this in mind, a group of poems emerged which seemed to talk to each other and together add up to more than the sum of their parts, as an experience of Kilkenny in poetry. I hope that when you read it, you'll agree!’

The launch of Kilkenny Poetry Broadsheet Issue 9 will take place on Friday 12th June at 5pm in No. 72, John Street, Kilkenny.

For further information on activities undertaken by the Arts Office please contact us at No. 72 John Street, Kilkenny T: 056 7794138 E: niamh.finn@kilkennycoco.ie

TUNDE TOTH WINS 2009 ARTLINKS CO. KILKENNY €5,000 BURSARY AWARD

Five ArtLinks Bursary Awards of €5,000 were awarded at Wicklow County Council on Monday 25th May 2009. Niamh Finn, Kilkenny Arts Office Arts Administrator, on behalf of Mary Butler, Kilkenny Arts Officer, presented Tunde Toth, a well known figure for her fibre and paper artworks, the 2009 ArtLinks Kilkenny Bursary Award.

Tunde offers textile and fibre art courses for adults and children in Co. Kilkenny and beyond (see ). The Bursary will chiefly assist Tunde’s professional development; she recently was invited to participate in the 20th International Association of Hand Paper makers and Paper Artists Congress in Tasmania, Australia to both lead workshops, and research developments in this area. The Bursary will enable Tunde to build on her recent experiences to create a new participatory body of work which uses organic materials, references the local environment and ultimately engages others in this unique art form. On receiving news of the ArtLinks Bursary from Kilkenny Arts Officer, Mary Butler, Tunde said, ‘she is very excited and looking forward to the process of completing this project.’ Mary Butler added ‘that is a great endorsement of Tunde’s work and it was wonderful to tell her on her return from Tasmania that she was to receive this Bursary Award’. ArtLinks would like to congratulate Tunde’s excellent standard of the proposal she submitted and acknowledge all the applications received from the County.

Kilkenny Artist Tunde Toth Calls for Paper Artists and Papermakers

Tunde Toth – Artist

Kozo Studio and Gallery

As a Paper and Fibre Artist I have recently travelled to Tasmania for the 20th IAPMA Congress (International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists). I have been invited both to present workshops and exhibit my art work at the Congress and the “New Paper – Old Land” international paper art exhibition.

I'm in the process of establishing the Irish Network/Guild of Paper Artists and Papermakers - a network that assists and promotes artists, makers and raises awareness and appreciation for an ancient art form and related contemporary practice. This network has a lot of potential: promoting member's practice through the network's own website, blogs, organizing exhibitions and educational programmes (workshops, talks, demonstrations, inviting artists of international repute...etc.) and benefiting from international networking opportunities.

I would like to hear from artists and makers – paper and fibre artists, hand papermakers, crafts people and visual artists working with handmade paper in their practice in various contexts - who are interested in taking part in this project.

To express your interest please send the following information via e-mail to: tundetune@

•expression of interest and your full contact details

•short description of your work/practice – 1 A4 page only

•2 images of your recent works and/or links to your website or blog or social networking site to view your work

•indication on whether you are available during June/July to attend our first meeting, in Kilkenny or in Dublin.

CREATE: Artist in the Community Scheme 2009: Call

Twice yearly, the Arts Council offers grants managed by Create to enable artists and communities of place/or interest to work together on projects. The scheme is open to artists from artform disciplines including architecture, street art, film, visual arts and traditional arts.

The aim of the scheme is to encourage intense collaboration between communities of place and/or interest and artists, culminating in an artwork or a project in which the members of the community group and the artists work together in order to realise an artistic project or an event. It is essential that meaningful consultation take place between the artist and the community group, so that both parties are involved in deciding on the nature of the project. Group ownership of the art should be maintained at every stage.

Ireland at 2009 Venice Biennale

The Irish Pavilion at the 53rd International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia is pleased to present Irish representatives Sarah Browne, Gareth Kennedy and Kenny Browne at Istituto Santa Maria della Pietá Calle della Pietá, Castello 3701, from 7 June to 22 November 2009. A preview and press reception to launch the exhibition will be held at 5pm on Friday 5 June 2009.

Curated by Irish Commissioner Caoimhín Corrigan (Arts Officer of Leitrim County Council and curator of The Dock in Carrick-on-Shannon), Ireland's presentation at the 2009 Venice Biennale seeks to foreground two artists (but three practices) for whom an engagement of and with people is central to their practice.

Sarah Browne has commissioned a bespoke hand-knotted carpet from Donegal Carpets and produced a video piece documenting discussions with workers at the factory. Since graduating from NCAD Sarah Browne has participated in projects, residencies and artist exchanges in Ireland, Japan, Iceland, and the UK. She has also presented her work in Poland and China. In 2006 she was awarded the Apexart international residency in New York.

Gareth Kennedy investigates the cultural capital associated with music from Ireland by inviting buskers transplanted from Dublin city centre to the Docklands area of the city to recreate their performances in Venice. Kennedy has previously exhibited in Ireland, England, Scotland, USA and Thailand. Although grounded within his background as a sculptor, his practice embraces contemporary realities inherent within economic, environmental, social and aesthetic realities.

At Venice 2009 Kennedy Browne, the collaborative partnership of Sarah Browne & Gareth Kennedy that authors work distinct from their solo practices, presents a new video work addressing Dublin as a city of 167 languages and 'the city Google chose' for its EMEA operations.

Sculpture in the Parklands received Business to Arts Award

Sculpture in the Parklands was presented with the Corporate and Cultural/Social Responsibility Award by President Mary McAleese at this year's Business to Arts award ceremony at Castletown House on 20 May 2009.

Bord na Móna's ongoing partnership with Sculpture in the Parklands, Offaly County Council Arts Office and the 2008 collaboration with the Crafts Council of Ireland was commended by Business to Arts as an exemplary Corporate and Cultural Social Responsibility programme. In 2008 the combined partnership secured environmental artist Patrick Dougherty for the annual Sculpture in the Parklands residency, resulting in the monumental work 'Ruaille Buaille'. In 2008 Sculpture in the Parklands was also included in the programme of the International Peat Congress, introducing delegates to a potential use for cutaway bogs.

Sculpture in the Parklands is a community recreational facility that provides an opportunity for visitors to interact with contemporary works of art in a unique environment 365 days a year. This year's residency programme will be held during September with invited artists Julian Wild (UK) and Alan Counihan (Ireland).
