2018 annual meeting highlights

Executive Report

Membership Corporation

held its 80th annual

meeting of members on

June 9 at South Georgia

Technical College in

Americus. Following the

recognition of special guests, Congressman Sanford Bishop updated

Ted McMillan President/CEO

the members on federal legislative issues that

affect the daily lives of rural Georgians.

President/CEO Ted McMillan addressed the

members by first introducing new director

Eddie R. Watson on Sumter EMC's board.

Watson has worked and lived in Schley county

for the past 33 years and is the owner of two

funeral homes, Watson-Giddens in Ellaville

and Watson-Tante in Buena Vista, as well as

Watson's Vault Company and Watson Farms.

He was appointed in December 2017 to fill the

vacancy on the board created by the untimely

death of Charles Hart who represented Schley

County.

McMillan then focused on one of the

strongest attributes of the electric cooperative

system, the commitment of EMCs to help

each other during storms. This attribute was

on full display when 13,000 linemen and other

utility personnel--1,500 from EMCs in other

states--worked tirelessly to restore power in

the wake of Hurricane Irma, which caused

550,000 power outages in Georgia alone.

These remarkable efforts and the critical work

line crews perform each day gave rise to the

unveiling of the "Thank a Lineman" vehicle

license plate, the state's first Georgia vehicle

license plate to honor linemen for their first

response efforts.

McMillan mentioned potential changes to

the Clean Power Plan and the continued

diversification of the cooperative's electric generation options, including additional utility scale solar resources. He touched on changes that technological advances in the areas of electric vehicles, drones and artificial intelligence will have on the electric power industry and touted the cooperative business model as uniquely suited to both take advantage of those changes and protect the members' best interest at the same time.

McMillan dedicated the Annual Report in honor of director Chares E. Hart, who represented Schley County for 18 years and was serving as Secretary/Treasurer at the time of his death in July 2017. He then paid tribute to two retired directors who passed away in 2017, H.K. Harp, Jr. who represented Chattahoochee County for 44 years and Ida N. Chambers who represented Lee County for 22 years. He closed by thanking our state and federal legislators for their ongoing support of issues impacting rural Georgians.

Grand Prize

Bob Jernigan, Sumter EMC Chairman, presented Ethry Reliford from Preston (pictured) with the grand prize, a $2,000 Sumter EMC appliance sales and service center gift certificate. Calvin Laney from Preston won the second prize, a 48-inch Sony LED HDTV, and Gladys Burks of Cuthbert won the the microwave oven drawing.

EMC experienced another

successful year in 2017.

The Cooperative's books

are audited annually. The

2017 audit was conducted by the certified public accounting firm, McNair,

Michael D. Webb Secretary-Treasurer

McLemore, Middlebrooks & Co., LLC. The

audit is on file at the Cooperative's office.

During the 2017 year, capital credits

totaling $303,663 were refunded to members.

This amount represents retirements to the

estates of deceased patrons. See the 2017

Annual Report for additional details.

Rev. Jack D. Ray, Chairman of the 2018 Nominating Committee, presented four nominees for election: William E. Harris, Sumter County; Glenn E. Davis, Terrell/ Dougherty Counties; Raymond Goodwin, Webster/Randolph Counties; and Willie Green Cutts, At-large. The membership elected the four nominees, as presented, to serve for a three-year term.

Following the annual meeting, a special meeting of the Board of Directors was held to elect officers for the 2018-2019 year. Mr. Bob Jernigan was elected Chairman, Dr. Cecil O. Myers as Vice-Chairman, Mr. Michael D. Webb as Secretary-Treasurer and Mr. William E. Harris as Assistant Secretary.

Sumter EMC Board reappoints Foundation

trustees to two-year terms

The Board of Directors of Sumter EMC, in accordance with Articles IV and VII of the bylaws of Sumter EMC Foundation, Inc. reappointed the following directors to serve on the Foundation Board of Trustees for a successive two-year term from May 2018 to May 2020: Abbie Dillard, Chattahoochee County; Elaine Ruckel, Lee County, Lehanne Singleton, Marion County; Marie Miles, Terrell/Dougherty Counties; and Elizabeth Waters, Sumter County. Ted McMillan, Sumter EMC President/CEO, reappointed Greg Crowder and Andrea Walker to serve as Employee Trustees for a successive one-year term ending May 2019.

The Board of Trustees is comprised of Sumter EMC members who serve on a voluntary basis. Trustees distribute the funds raised through Operation Round Up? (ORU).

At their May 15, 2018 meeting, the Sumter EMC Foundation Board awarded $20,607.95 from ORU funds. The following

organizations received grants: Challenger League, $2,500; Chehaw, $5,000; CussetaChattahoochee County Public Library, $2,500; Lake Blackshear Regional Library, $1,000; Sumter County Sheriff's Office, $3,590; Southland Academy, $1,500; Marion County Recreational Department $1,517.95; and Prevent Blindness $500.

The Sumter EMC Foundation is funded by ORU money donated by Sumter EMC members. The electric bills of participating members are rounded up each month to the next dollar. Every penny collected is given back to local communities within Sumter EMC's service area through grants to local schools and civic or charitable organizations.

To date, grants totaling more than $962,211 have been awarded from ORU. If you do not already participate in ORU, and would like to be a contributing member, call Sumter EMC today and ask to be added to the program.

Builder Rebates

Sumter EMC offers up to $500 rebates to builders and individuals who purchase $1,200 in appliances from Sumter EMC and build new totalelectric homes or apartments that are served by Sumter EMC. Call for details and be sure to ask about our Free Water Heater program!

Night Deposit Boxes

are available at the Americus, Leesburg and Cusseta offices for payments made between 5 p.m. and 8:30 a.m.

Notice of Last Date to Claim Refund Checks

In compliance with O.C.G.A. ? 44-12-190 of The Disposition of Unclaimed Property Act, Sumter EMC is attempting to locate former members whose refund checks were issued between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013 for membership fees and deposits that were returned by the U.S. Post Office as "undeliverable" or have otherwise been unclaimed.

A current list of these members is listed below and is also posted for your review at our website, , and at the following office locations: Sumter EMC Headquarters, 1120 Felder Street, Americus, GA (M - F, 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m., Saturday,

9 a.m. - 2 p.m.); the Southern District Office, 133 Century Road West, Leesburg, GA and the Cusseta District Office, 300 A US Highway 520, Cusseta, GA (M - F, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., closed all day Saturday).

The last possible date to claim these funds is October 15, 2018. If these funds are not claimed by this date, they will be delivered to the Georgia Department of Revenue, as permitted by O.C.G.A. ? 44-12-190. After this date, any attempts to reclaim your property will need to be directed to the Georgia Department of Revenue.
