2017-2018 Intercultural Development CatalogIntroductionWe are offering opportunities for intercultural competency development as part of our ongoing effort to support pluralism and inclusion at Cascadia. This catalog includes options available for all employee groups by the President’s Office and Human Resources. You will find:Cavolines – These lean more heavily on conversation, though you will also find skill development. You are expected to be an engaged participant by listening to others, sharing openly and honestly, and completing activities. Readings and videos will supplement dialogue and practice.Skill builders – These lean more heavily on skill development, though you will also find conversation. You are expected to show up eager to learn and willing to open your mind to new skills and ideas.We listened to your feedback from 2016-2017. You want to dialogue with colleagues and learn skills to implement right away. You’ll find that.You want more options. We added an additional facilitator to create more opportunities.You want the opportunity to learn online. We added a hybrid option.You want to learn about the Cavoline facilitators. We added short bios. Each facilitator has also completed Train the Trainer: Facilitating Conversations on Race with Cultures Connecting.Supervisor Support and ApprovalWe are hopeful all who are interested will be able to participate in at least one of the opportunities on the following pages. We encourage supervisors to actively support their teams in choosing options and to approve participation requests. However, we realize for some this may be difficult due to schedules or work area coverage requirements. If your request is not able to be approved, know we are committed to pluralism and inclusion and will continue offering intercultural learning opportunities so you may participate in the future.Full-Time Faculty + Classified and Exempt StaffParticipation in opportunities on the following pages will be considered part of your work load (faculty) or workday (staff); you will not receive additional payment for attending.Associate FacultyYou may use these opportunities as Cascadia-sponsored professional development. If you attend three or more hours you will be eligible for $100 (professional development rate for one half-day event). You will not receive more payment for attending more than three hours. Priority Hire Associate Faculty may use attendance at one 90-minute session as your professional development requirement for the quarter.Part-Time Hourly StaffYou are eligible to attend up to nine hours per year, but not more than four hours per quarter, of opportunities on the following pages. This is not in addition to your contracted weekly hours, but a replacement for the work you would accomplish during your hours. This Cavoline will address -isms that take place at Cascadia and provide participants with skills for in-the-moment (of offense, microaggression, conflict) response, understanding, and productive conversation. Sustainability is an eclectic and often times contentious field that requires listening for understanding and careful consideration of diverse perspectives. Jodie is excited to apply her conflict resolution and problem solving skills, experiences, and lessons learned in the sustainability field to support pluralism and inclusion at Cascadia.?In addition to her technical training in the sustainability field, Jodie has completed courses in conflict resolution and participated in the immersion retreat Exploring Power, Privilege, and Tools for Change with the Center for Diversity and the Environment.Option #2 – Cavoline with Tasha Walston: Cultural ConditioningDescriptionThis Cavoline explores cultural conditioning. She has completed coursework/training in storytelling strategies for dismantling racism, racism and mental health, facilitating difficult conversations about race, consent, conflict resolution, and crisis counseling. Tasha’s work as a writer and community organizer is an?extension of her dedication to the larger project of teaching and learning around systems of?oppression and collective liberation. In that spirit, she currently serves on the board of directors?for the Northwest Animal Rights Network, is a founding member and curriculum developer for?the Consent Academy, and expects to earn her certificate as a comprehensive sexuality?educator from Planned Parenthood this April. Her latest writing appears on the feminist blog?Hellish Rebuke.Option #3 – Cavoline with Mohan Raj: Unconscious BiasDescriptionThis Cavoline explores unconscious bias and mindful interactions. Participants will use real and hypothetical examples to practice navigating interactions, and have time to learn tips and tools from each other. The impetus for this Cavoline comes from a seminar series, Engineering and Social Justice, which Mohan held in Spring 2016. He has been exploring the intersections between social justice, sustainability, engineering, and education, and looks forward to expanding on the spirit of this work in his Cavoline in a way that will be relevant for all employee groups. Mohan has participated in FACTC’s Retreat on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Curriculum for the Bioregion conference series.Option #4 – Cavoline with Sarah Zale: Compassionate Listening, a Key to Intercultural CompetencyDescriptionDuring this highly experiential Cavoline, participants will share stories of conflict with others at work, home, or in the world. This course uses a hybrid format to meet the needs of employees who would like flexible opportunities to learn and resources for desk-side reference. Online activities will be unique from classroom activities; activities will enhance each other rather than repeat each other. If you participated in the empathy skill builder in 2016-2017, this course will expand upon that content.
