Benedictine University

Dear Benedictine University Students,

When students first learn that Benedictine University offers programs abroad, many ask two very important questions: What is study abroad, and why should I participate?

Studying abroad gives you an opportunity to continue your education while living and traveling in a country outside the United States. Experiencing a different culture firsthand instills a new appreciation of our global context, and can enhance your awareness of and sensitivity to other cultures. Studying and working abroad can challenge your assumptions and routines while deepening your knowledge of a chosen academic subject.

This unique opportunity will expose you to the lives and work of people in other cultures. New settings test your assumptions and place you in unfamiliar situations that broaden your ability to set goals in new and challenging environments. You will be able to interact with people and cultures with different perspectives while developing the interpersonal communication and intercultural competence that potential employers value. You will have the opportunity to network within your area of study with industry leaders in other countries, which will help you develop a more sophisticated multicultural perspective. You may even discover new career possibilities.

The University's Office of International Programs and Services works diligently to provide quality programs abroad. Those who participate in study abroad programs are given the opportunity to take courses that will meet major, minor, academic core or graduation requirements. Our dedicated staff provides step-by-step assistance throughout the entire process, including a debriefing when you return home.

It is the hope of Benedictine University that all students participate in some sort of international experience, whether it's a semester, yearlong, faculty-led or short-term program, an internship abroad or a mission trip. This brochure will explore the different types of programs we offer, help you to begin the process and answer many questions about what it means to be a student of the world.

Thank you for your time and enjoy the world through study abroad!

Sincerely,

Marc D. Davidson Assistant Director, International and Study Abroad Services

How Do I Study Abroad?

The Office of International Programs and Services (IPS) staff is available to help you plan for studying in another country. No matter what your major or minor is, we can help you find an appropriate study abroad opportunity that fits within your academic program. Study abroad programs are available for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Study Abroad Checklist:

Step 1: Learn about study abroad options Visit one of our study abroad fairs or information sessions to learn about options offered to Benedictine University students, or visit IPS to make an appointment for an initial advising session.

Step 2: Meet with IPS staff ? Review program options ? Discuss the passport application process ? Discuss possible financial aid options ? Review study abroad at ben.edu/ips

Step 3: Select your program ? Select a program ? Request a program specific application ? Complete the BenU application ? Apply for a passport if needed

Step 4: Prepare for your trip ? Review entry requirements to host country ? Check the Center for Disease Control (CDC) for health requirements ? Apply for host country visa if needed ? Attend orientation sessions ? Research your host country ? Enroll in Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at step.step

Step 5: Go abroad!

Application deadlines Each program has a specific application deadline. Please adhere to these deadlines to ensure that our staff has adequate time to review all necessary information.

Mandatory Orientation

Students are required to attend a pre-departure orientation session where we will discuss cross-cultural concepts, culture shock, safety and security issues, and checklist items regarding passports, visas, money and packing. Failure to attend will jeopardize your ability to receive credits from your abroad program. You will be notified of the orientation dates via email.

Passports

Make sure your passport is valid for six months after your planned return date to the United States. If you need to renew your passport or apply for the first time, start this process immediately by going to travel.passport. You must submit a copy of your passport to IPS.

Visas

The majority of Benedictine's study abroad programs require a student visa. Applications for visas are taken on an individual basis with guidance from IPS. You will receive detailed information on visas at your initial meeting with the assistant director of International and Study Abroad Services. IPS cannot guarantee approval of foreign visas as host country's embassies have the right to deny visa applications based on their own criteria.

Academic Planning

IPS staff members want all study abroad students to have an amazing experience while abroad ? this includes making sure completed international coursework counts toward your major or minor. A course pre-approval process has been developed to ensure that credit for courses taken abroad will transfer to Benedictine University.

Financial Planning

Students can apply for a variety of study abroad scholarships. Visit ben.edu /ips for a comprehensive list of scholarships. Students who participate in one of our exchange programs may apply all University, state and federal aid to cover expenses for a semester or yearlong program. Students who decide to participate in a third-party program offered outside of IPS may apply federal aid to their costs.

Internship Information

Are you interested in gaining hands-on work experience while earning credits for your major? International internships provide Benedictine students with a unique experience that combines a desire to learn about different cultures with skills that will be valuable for you in your future career.

Benedictine University works with partner institutions and other organizations to provide undergraduate and graduate students with internship abroad opportunities. Students can find opportunities for internships which earn credit for their academic program and are within their field of study at international companies located all over the world.

In order to earn credits for an internship, students must meet with their academic advisor prior to applying to any internship program. In addition, College of Business students must meet with Rick Cali, associate dean of the College of Business, if they plan to use their international internship to meet requirements for their major.

Partnership Exchange Programs

Benedictine University has developed partnerships with 16 institutions in nine countries. These programs are unique to Benedictine because the cost of tuition for a semester, yearlong or summer program at the University is the same as a semester, yearlong or summer program abroad.
