This message is meant to provide you an update on COVID-19 (coronavirus) and the potential impact on our district. We are monitoring the changing circumstances and are relying on guidance and information provided by federal and state public health agencies. Given the recent and elevated attention to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) in the national and local media, I want to reach out and share with you information and important health tips.As of 3/12/20 there are no reported cases in our county. However, we are making plans to increase prevention strategies and prepare a response if an outbreak occurs in our area. We are using resources provided by the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) and our local Emergency Management team to develop these procedures. We are also staying in close contact with the Tennessee Department of Health and the Tennessee Department of Education. In addition to our routine cleaning procedure in the system and on our school buses, extra attention is being given to the following steps:Daily sanitation of classroom high touch areasDaily sanitation of bus seats and high touch areasCommunication of factual information regarding the COVID-19 virusEducation of students regarding proper handwashing techniques and other methods to reduce the spread of germsContinued monitoring of student and staff absenteeismAdditional tracking of students’ symptoms during nurse visitsWhile we hope the virus will not impact our area, we must prepare in case of emergency. In the event our county is impacted by the COVID-19 virus our Crisis management team has developed procedures to make sure we are able to:Continue providing healthy school lunchesContinue instruction in the event of an extended closureThoroughly sanitize and disinfect school building and busesBelow are some general helpful tips from the CDC we can utilize to help ensure personal health:1) Remember it’s not too late for a flu vaccination. See your health care provider for additional information. 2) Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. 3) If you are sick with flu symptom, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities (your fever should be gone for 24 hour without the use of medicine). 4) Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs spread this way. 5) Cough into your sleeve or a tissue, then dispose of it properly after use.For additional information about CODIV-19 (Coronavirus), please access the CDC through the following link. We are also adding new information to our district website as we receive it from federal and state agencies. Sincerely, Tim WatkinsDirector of Obion County School District ................
