5865495-588645Mathematics Alignment LessonGrade 5 Quarter 1 Day 29Common Core State Standard(s)5.NBT.7 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. Alignment Lesson Adding Decimals Using ModelsReview base ten block representation of decimals (see Day 14 Alignment Lesson).Display Transparency/Blackline Master, “Adding Decimals Using Models 1”. Present Scenario 1 to students and ask them to use what they know about decimals to estimate the number of miles Andy ran. Discuss the addition sentence represented by the problem. Write the sentence horizontally on the board (0.75 + 1.3). Ask students how they might use base ten blocks to find the solution.Model how to use base ten blocks to add the decimals. Teach students to “regroup” ten tenths into one whole using the base ten blocks, so that the result shows two wholes and five hundredths. Compare the answer to the class estimate.Present Scenario 2 to students and have students work in pairs to find a solution, using the same four steps you modeled.Use Math Talk to have pairs of students share solutions. Be sure to include discussion about place value and regrouping.Display Transparency/Blackline Master, “Adding Decimals Using Models 2”. Present Scenario 3 to students and have students work independently to find a solution using the same four steps.Use Math Talk to have students share solutions. As students share solutions, have them draw the base ten representations on the board. This will help make the connection to adding using base ten grids on paper.Display Transparency/Blackline Master, “Adding Decimals Using Models 3”. Present Scenario 4 to students and estimate the amount of dry ingredients. Write the horizontal addition problem that represents the problem and ask how students might use base ten grids on paper to find the answer to the problem.Model how to shade the decimals on the base ten grids by first breaking apart the numbers in order to group like place values together (shade the whole, then shade the 5, 7, and 1 tenths, then shade the 5 hundredths). Compare the answer to the class estimate.Use the remaining time for students to practice and discuss using Blackline Master “Adding Decimals with Base Ten Grids.” Students should finish any remaining problems and the journal prompt for homework.Note: An extra page of grids has been included in this lesson to be used for additional practice as needed. Standards for Mathematical PracticeStandard 2- Reason abstractly and quantitatively.Standard 4- Model with mathematics.Standard 5- Use appropriate tools strategically. In addition, this refers to a new group of ten being made (can be a new group of ten of any place value).Source: Teacher CreatedName: ________________________Date: ________________________Adding Decimals Using Models 1 Scenario 1Andy is training for a 2-mile road race. To help him prepare, he decided to run twice a week. This week, he ran 0.75 miles on Tuesday and 1.3 miles on Thursday. How many miles did Andy run this week?Scenario 2Vivian enjoys riding her bike on the weekends. On Saturday, she rode 1.4 miles to the park, 0.75 miles to the store, and 1.14 miles home. How many miles did Vivian ride on Saturday?Remember to: Estimate the answer. Write a horizontal problem to represent the scenario. Use base ten blocks to find a solution. Compare your estimate with your actual answer.Adding Decimals Using Models 2Scenario 3Vanessa is helping her dad build a bookcase. They need a top shelf that is 0.83 meters long, a bottom shelf that is 0.83 meters long, and a middle shelf that is 0.79 meters long. How much wood is needed for Vanessa and her dad to build the shelves of their bookcase?Remember to: Estimate the answer. Write a horizontal problem to represent the scenario. Use base ten blocks to find a solution. Compare your estimate with your actual answer.Adding Decimals Using Models 3Scenario 4Oscar is baking a cake for his sister’s birthday. The recipe requires 1.5 cups of flour, 0.75 cups of sugar, and 0.1 cups of baking powder. What is the total amount of dry ingredients Oscar needs for this recipe?426720016383021336001638300163830Adding Decimals Using ModelsAnswer Key Scenario 1 – 0.75 + 1.3 = 2.05 milesModel with Base Ten Blocks: Begin with 7 rods and 5 units. Add 1 flat and 3 rods. Trade 10 rods for 1 flat. Remaining total is 2 flats and 5 units.Scenario 2 – 1.4 + 0.75 + 1.14 = 3.29 milesModel with Base Ten Blocks: Begin with 1 flat and 4 rods. Add 7 rods and 5 units. Trade 10 rods for 1 flat. Total of first two numbers is 2 flats, 1 rod, and 5 units. Add 1 flat, 1 rod, and 4 units. Final total is 3 flats, 2 rods, and 9 units.Scenario 3 – 0.83 + 0.83 + 0.79 = 2.45 metersModel with Base Ten Blocks: Begin with 8 rods and 3 units. Add 8 rods and 3 units. Trade 10 rods for 1 flat. Total of first two numbers is 1 flat, 6 rods, and 6 units. Add 7 rods and 9 units. Trade 10 rods for 1 flat. Trade 10 units for 1 rod. Remaining total is 2 flats, 4 rods, and 5 units.Scenario 4 – 1.5 + 0.75 + 0.1 = 2.35Shade on Base Ten Grid: Break apart the numbers in order to group like place values together. First, shade the whole. Then, shade the tenths (5, 7, and 1). Last shade the hundredths (5). The total shaded is the answer.Name: ________________________Date: ________________________Adding Decimals with Base Ten Grids1. 0.22 + 0.39 = _______ 2. 0.3 + 0.45 + 0.73 = _______4572000958852590800958850958853. 1.45 + 0.3 = _______ 4. 0.29 + 0.3 + 0.15 = _______4343400127000198120012700001270005. 0.75 + 1.53 = _______43434009588522860009588522860095885Adding Decimals with Base Ten GridsAnswer Key1. 0.22 + 0.39 = 0.61 2. 0.3 + 0.45 + 0.73 = 1.48 3. 1.45 + 0.3 = 1.75 4. 0.29 + 0.3 + 0.15 = 0.745. 0.75 + 1.53 = 2.28Name: ________________________Date: ________________________Adding Decimals Using Models Journal Prompt2743200-1905Choose one of the addition problems you completed for homework and explain how you used the hundreds grids to solve the problem.
