September 2020 Paperback: | £7.99 | 96pp ISBN: 978-1-912745-02-9 Ages: 7-11 BIC: YDP

Some people like to think that a collection of poems for children has to be either funny or serious, as if there are two types of children who will only like one or the other. But life isn't like that, is it! Some days we think hard, some days we cry and some days we laugh loudly and boldly, and so do children. Many of the poems in this collection are about real life. Others are about life as it's found in the quirky imagination of the poet. Between the covers of this book, you will find poems that puzzle you, tell you stories, make you ask questions. There are dangerous poems, delicate poems and daft poems. One minute you will be hiding in a dusty PE cupboard with a friend who is sad, the next you will be buying ice-cream from a polar bear. This is a roller coaster of poems, that mirrors the ups and downs of daily life. Whether you are in thinking mood, laughing mood, or a crazy mood, there are poems here that will keep you company.

LITTLE ISLAND

Savage Her Reply by Deirdre Sullivan, illustrated by Karen Vaughan. Little Island October 2020

Introducing the new novel from the multi-award-winning Deidre Sullivan; Savage Her Reply is a retelling, in Deidre’s inimitable feminist, dark and lyrical style, of the classic Irish folk tale, The Children of Lir. As with the beautiful Tangleweed and Brine collection, Savage Her Reply will be illustrated by Karen Vaughan.

Aífe marries Lir, a king with four children by his previous wife. Jealous of his affection for his children, the witch Aífe turns them into swans for 900 years.   Retold through the voice of Aífe, Savage Her Reply is unsettling and dark, feminist and fierce, yet nuanced in its exploration of the guilt of a complex character. Books Make Good Pets

Books make good pets and don't need going to the vet.

You don't have to keep them on a lead or throw them a stick.

They'll wag their words whenever you flick their dog-eared pages.

Even howl an ancient tale for the inward-listening ear.

Did you know that a book can take you anywhere? You only need to turn the pages of a story, and in a moment, you and your book could be crossing the waves in a pirate ship... or diving with mermaids... or even snoozing with a dragon.

Books really DO make good pets! Why don't you peep inside this one, and take your mind on an adventure?

This delightful original picture book poem is the perfect gift for anyone who delights in the magic of a good book. Agard's evocative, lyrical style is perfectly complemented with illustrations by Momoko Abe, whose colourful visuals add character, transporting the reader into an enchanting world of imagination.

BUSTER BOOKS

Hello librarians! We wanted to catch you up on all things at Buster Books. We are very excited about next year (not least because we turn the ripe old age of 20!) because we have recently published some fab books. Here is the full catalogue, but the highlights are:

In middle grade, our standout title for this autumn is A Day in the Life of a Poo, a Gnu and You. Out on 3 Sept, it’s a laugh-out-loud guide to life on earth, written by Mike Barfield (of Private Eyefame) and illustrated by Jess Bradley (Beano and Phoenix Comics). The book is broken into three sections: human body, animals and earth and science, and is educational as well as hilarious - well-timed, as seems we could all do with more laughter at the moment!

2020 has been an exciting year for us as we won the Blue Peter Award for the book of facts for Rise Up: Ordinary Kids with Extraordinary Stories. The book includes29 empowering tales of young boys and girls from all over the world who have achieved brilliance. From action against climate change to surviving a plane crash in the jungle to inventing something incredible, there is a huge range here, and alsoincludes tips so readers can emulate their heroes.

Following the massive success of Dinosaur Department Store last year, author Lily Murray has been busy writing more books for us! Monet’s Cat came out in May and is a great way of starting early conversations about art, and Calm Down Cooper! is a wonderful tale of a cute puppy whose world is turned upside down when a parrot called Pandemonium comes to stay.

Also on the picture book side, we have Slow Down Monkey! by zoologist and children’s presenter Jess French. With absolutely beautiful artwork, the book follows a spider monkey as she rushes through the jungle panicking about her birthday party, until her friend the sloth teaches her to slow down and appreciate the little things.

This novel is a unique mix of football action scenes, Shakespearean political drama, and unsettling ghost story. Michael Rosen has reimagined this much-read play in schools as the tale of Macbeth, a promising 12-year-old striker on the Shotfield football team, and his dubious rise to team captain. His mother, Mrs Macbeth, is hardhearted in pushing him to do whatever it takes to get ahead - dirty tricks included. And to push out the other key players and get noticed by academy scouts, fair is foul and fouls are fair..

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS

The Body Image Book for Girls: Love Yourself and Grow Up Fearless! By Dr Charlotte Markey.

At last! An honest, practical, accessible handbook for girls that deals with body image worries with a whole-self approach, backed by scientific research and written by a psychology expert who specialises in body image issues.

Growing up in a world where celebrities are presented as role models, where young people are pressured to document their whole lives on social media, where fad diets are abundant and fashion choices are scrutinised, it’s no wonder that most girls are dissatisfied with some aspect of their bodies. But an unhealthy body image can lead to serious problems including anxiety, depression and eating disorders.

Dr Charlotte Markey, mother to a 13-year-old daughter, and Professor of Psychology at Rutgers University in the USA, has compiled this guide based on years of research and talking to girls and parents about body image concerns. She helps girls aged 9-15 understand, accept, and appreciate their changing bodies, providing all the facts on puberty, mental health, self-care, why diets are bad news, dealing with social media, and everything in-between. Girls will find answers to questions they have always wanted to ask, the truth behind many body image myths, and real-life stories from girls who share their own experiences.

Published on 10th September 2020, £9.99 paperback with colour illustrations, ISBN 9781108718776.
