PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT TASK 1Centre Number 1057Engineering Graphics and DesignGrade 122011Estee LiebenbergExamination number: 111057000164Table of Contents2011 Assessment Sheet – Appendix ADeclaration of AuthenticityTask DescriptionPAT Letter and Instructions GuideDesign BriefBriefOrganisers have requested that an auditorium be built that will be able to accompany five hundred people. The auditorium must have an entrance foyer with suitable toilets for males and females as well as provision for the disabled. The kitchen should be situated next to the foyer and should include a serving hatch in order to provide easy access to the refreshments. The second floor of the auditorium requires a centre management area which includes six offices, toilets for staff and two smaller conference rooms for small groups of up to 50 people. The parking area outside the auditorium should also provide space for the disabled. The building should have an air-conditioning system which will offer comfort for the people.I will design the auditorium so that it can be used for many purposes, namely: large meetings, presentations and performances. The building is thus going to be designed to accommodate large audiences (500 seats). It will have a wide span and be two storeys high in order to accommodate seating, sightline and acoustical requirements. I will design the auditorium so that it has sloped floors with level terraces for each row of seating to offer proper sightlines from the seats to the stage. The building should also have notification systems such as lights and signs to indicate emergency exits; the notification systems will thus be used for easy and fast evacuations. Sprinklers should be built into the ceiling in case of fire. Low level lights should also be mounted on the walls as well as fastened to the stairs to provide people with light when walking in the auditorium during a performance/presentation while the main lights are switched off.People with disabilities could also enter the auditorium; therefore, they should also be accommodated for. I will build sloped floors next to stairs for wheel chair transport; a toilet cubicle that will especially accommodate them and they will have their own parking space. As I design the auditorium, I will look at energy saving features which would enable money-saving in the long term, and will also be environmentally friendly.Since the auditorium is multi-purposed, the atmosphere is going to be a combination of entertainment/artistic/dramatic and business-like. Therefore, I have to make the auditorium’s style suitable for performances but also business. The style will thus be a modern dramatic e.g. simple curves in unique designs will suit the purpose.ConstraintsThe auditorium should provide seating for maximum 500 people. The two conference rooms should accommodate for 50 people (in each room).SpecificationsThe auditorium must have:500 seatsRaised stage areaAdequate lightingAir-conditioning system and ventilationThe kitchen must have:Adequate refrigerationEquipment that can cater for more than 500 peopleAdequate washing up areaServing hatchThe bathrooms must have:Adequate facilities for more than 500 peopleAt least two cubicles for the disabledUpstairs must have:6 Management officesToilet facilities for staff2 conference rooms that can hold 50 peopleResearch (The evaluation and code is used to show application in the final design)Space required for auditorium and toiletsAuditorium:Toilet:Formulas:Auditorium: 0.65 – 0.84m? per seat0.65 x 500 = 325 m?0.84 x 500 = 420 m?Range: 325 – 420 m?Stage: 0.19 m? per seat0.19 x 500 = 95 m?Foyer: 0.65 – 0.84 m?0.65 x 500 = 325 m?0.84 x 500 = 420 m?Range: 325 – 420 m?Therefore, minimum size of auditorium can be:325 + 95 + 325 = 745 m?And maximum size of auditorium can be:420 + 95 + 420 = 935 m?Seating area: One seat is 584 mm in width. 500 seats altogether would be:500 x 584 mm = 292 000 mm This width plus two rows of 1.2 m each would make the overall seating width 294?400 mmFrom the back of a chair to the back of another chair is 1?000 mm. 12 seats in depth would make overall depth 12?000 mm.Rows:A maximum of 13 seats are allowed to take up the width of a block. I would like to have an even number of seats in each block, thus I will work with 12 seats in a block.500/12 = 41.6666667 = 42I will have two blocks in the middle which is 12 seats in width and 12 seats in depth, therefore 144 seats in a block. 4 seats will be taken away in these two blocks to make up the 500 seats as the two side blocks consists out of 108 seats each. Therefore, I will design four blocks as follows: width142 seats142 seats108 seats108 seatsdepthDifferent baselines for determining the number of toilets and hand-wash basins:US Army standard is 1 toilet per 25 males and 1 toilet per 17 femalesInternational Code Council requires 1 toilet per 40 people at night clubsThe Health and Safety Executive in UK specifies 1 toilet per 500 males and 1 urinal per 150 males; and 1 toilet per 100 females for an event of six hours or more (the less hours, the more toilets are needed)The UK Workplace Regulations 1992 specify 5 toilets for 100 females and 4 toilets and urinals for 100 males. An additional toilet should be provided for every 25 people above 100.Washington State Legislature suggests 5 toilets for a 100 people plus 1 more toilet for each additional 25 people. The duration of the event, agenda of the event and availability of beverages at the event determine how many toilets are needed for the people.Duration: The longer the event, the more often the people will need to use the toilet facilities. An individual will typically use the toilet facilities every 2 – 4 hours. The auditorium is used for performances and presentations, therefore, the events that take place will mostly be 4 hours or more.Agenda: Performances have one or more breaks in between the event, causing a mass amount of people to use the toilet facilities at the same time. In order to prevent people from standing in queues and missing the call back of the performance, a well thought through amount of toilets are needed.Availability of beverages: If alcohol and caffeine is served, 20 – 40% more toilet facilities are required. This is required because these drinks cause dehydration. In this case, the auditorium will not sell alcohol, but will provide people with caffeine drinks such as colas and coffee.I am going to follow the UK Workplace Regulations and the Washington State Legislature as they both follow the same baseline. The baseline determining 5 toilets for 100 females and 4 toilets for 100 males and including an additional toilet for every 25 people above 100 seems like a reasonable amount of toilets provided for 500 people in an auditorium. I am going to assume that there are 250 females and 250 males in the auditorium during a performance. Therefore, there should be 12 toilets and about 8 basins for females and 10 toilets (incl. Urinals) and 6 basins for males. Regarding the male toilets, I will make three fifths of the 10 toilet facilities urinals and the rest will be toilets, thus the male bathroom will have 6 urinals and 4 toilets. Since there are so many toilets required, I might design two male and female bathrooms on the West and on the East side of the auditorium or one in the foyer and one in the auditorium in order to ensure easy and fast access to them during the intervals of the performances. Therefore, each female bathroom would have 6 toilets and 4 wash basins and each male bathroom would have 3 urinals, 2 toilets and 3 wash basins.Measurements of a cubicle:2000H x 1800D x 1055WOne female bathroom will have 6 toilets in length, therefore, total length should be about 6?330 mm.The male bathroom will have approximately the same length as the female bathroom; however, length could be smaller if needed. I will design my male and female bathrooms to be the same in size.Lighting and Seating [CODE A]Low Level LightingStage lightingSeat LightsWall LightsStep LightAisle LightsType of lights: front, foot, follow, spot, beam, floodOption 1Option 2EvaluationFinal OptionFinal OptionFinal OptionBeacon Seat LightingFantasma LED Wall LightTwo-Tone BullnoseSoft AisleA5 – Ellipsoidal Reflector Spot LightA6 – Fresnel Lens SpotlightA7 – Parabolic Aluminized ReflectorA8 – LED LightsA9 – FloodlightsA10 – Strip LightsA11 – Follow spotsA12 – Automated FixturesFixture name:Usher Seat Light ULRBeacon Seat LightA1A2A3A4Supplier:TivoliTivoliThe light has a rounded finish thus looking elegant. Air-conditioning unit [CODE B]Types of Air-conditioning:Through-Wall UnitSingle Hosed Portable UnitCeiling cassette typeMini-duct, high velocityPassive Ground Source-Based CoolingDirect Expansion Central Air Conditioning PlantDescription:This is a common one room air-conditioner. It has interior controls which mean that interior air is cooled as a fan blows it over the evaporator. A second fan blows the exterior air over the condenser. In this way, heat is drawn from the room and released outside. Each room is cooled separately. This unit has one hose that runs from the back the back of the portable air-conditioner to the vent kit where hot air can be released. It can cool a room that is 44.1 m? or smaller. This unit is refrigeration based instead of evaporation based. This system is installed into the roof of the building. It has a group control option where up to 16 units can be controlled by one wired remote controller. Ceiling cassettes can be installed for up to 50 m in distance and high elevation applications can go up to 30 m. It provides cooling and fan operation. The rpm of the fan motor can be set according to the height of the installation. A mini-duct unit is a central air-conditioning unit. It uses ducts to move cooled air to more than one room. In a package system, the condenser, evaporator and compressor is located in a single outdoor unit on the ground or roof. When the a/c is turned on, room air is sucked in by return-air ducts. A filter ensures that dust and lint are removed from the air. The filtered air is then carried back into the rooms. The mini duct uses high velocity air to mix with the room air effectively. Underground air-cooling is environmentally friendly and is cost-efficient. The cool temperature of ground water or soil is pumped up to directly cool indoor air. It consumes less energy than heat pump-based systems. For large buildings or areas, ground source-coldness is combined with heat pump based heating systems which reduce energy consumption of central air-conditioning systems. This system cools the air by passing it over the cooling coil of the refrigeration plant. As a result, the cooling efficiency of the DX plants is high. The DX system has three parts: a plant room, an air handling unit and an air-conditioned room. The plant room consists out of the compressor and the condenser which are the important parts of the refrigeration system. The refrigerant leaves the plant room through an expansion valve which enters into the air handling unit which is kept in a separate room. The air handling unit consists out of an air filter, cooling coil and a large blower. The refrigerant enters the cooling coil where it cools the air before it enters the room. The ducts from the air handling room are all passed to the rooms that are to be cooled. The air absorbs the heat and then passes through the return air duct which takes it back to the air handling unit room. The air is then re-circulated. Advantage:Small and inexpensive when unit is bought for one room only. Can be connected to a dual hose unit, extending the system.Fades in with the ceiling – does not protrude and is pleasing to the eye as it has a finished look. The size of the unit allows it to be installed easier into already-built buildings. Due to the higher velocity air, particle build-up occurs less often. Cost-effective, environmentally friendly and reduces energy consumption.Multiple direct expansion systems can be installed to support a large area. As a result, a plant can be shut down if not needed, while other plants run at full load. If some plants break down, the other plants can still be used for a cooling purpose.Disadvantage:By cooling every room with a through-wall unit will be much more expensive than a central air-conditioning unit.Cools rooms less effectively than dual hosed units. It will also not be as effective as a central a/c unit.It can cause ceiling stains if not installed properly and could thus cause serious damage.A mini duct with a high velocity consumes a large amount of electricity. It is also louder/noisier than conventional systems. The system is still hardly developed and thus it will be rare to find builders who know how to install this type of system. The air handling units and the refrigerant piping can not be kept at be kept at long distances as there will be a drop in pressure and cooling along the way. For long piping, large amounts of refrigerant will be needed which makes the system very expensive. Chilled Water Central Air Conditioning SystemEvaluationDescription:In this system, the refrigerant cools water which is used to cool the air of the room. In the water plant, the ordinary water is cooled to a very low temperature by the refrigeration plant. The chilled water is pumped to various floors and rooms of the building. In each of these parts, there are air handling units installed which consists out of the blower, ducts and cooling coil. The blower absorbs the air that needs to be cooled and takes it through the ducts to the air handling unit where it is cooled by the cooling coil. The air is then passed back to the conditioned space. The plant also has a cooling tower which is used to cool the water with atmospheric air. The water is then re-circulated through the compressor and condenser. I choose the Chilled Water Central Air Conditioning System because it is effective in large areas and can be taken in long distances without losing the cooling effect. This system will work out to be cheaper than the Direct Expansion Central Air Conditioning System because extra refrigerant will not be needed. Advantages:The ducts and the air handling units are insulated to reduce loss of the cooling effect. In a large area, this system is cheaper than the DX air-conditioning system.Pillars and Concrete Slab for Foyer Roof [CODE C]PillarsTypeSteel ColumnConcrete ColumnLoad-Bearing Fibreglass ColumnsDescription:A steel H-Bar is bolted to a concrete pedestal. The concrete pedestal is built with reinforcement steel. This column is typically used to support a roof structure. The steel structure can be covered with other finishes if required. The reinforcement in the concrete encasement prevents excessive breakage of concrete under normal and fire conditions. The column is constructed using steel bars and cement concrete. It is constructed by digging up ground and laying a cement concrete foundation. Steel bar net and vertical bars are placed in the foundation. Form work is placed around the structure and cement concrete then fills the hole to the required height. The ground is refilled and the construction of the column starts. These columns are mainly used to support slabs.Fibreglass columns are made from highly advanced fibreglass reinforced polymers (FRP). It is extremely durable, yet lightweight. They require little maintenance. It also looks decorative and can be used in the entrance to add a beautiful finish.Advantages:The light weight and strength of the steel allows a smaller and lighter foundation to be used. Fire resistant.Corrosion protection in the encased columns.Fire resistant. Can be constructed to meet a wide range of dimensions. Can carry a heavy load due to steel vertical bars.LightweightRequires little maintenance. If used on outside, one coat of quality exterior paint is needed.Evaluation:I am going to use steel columns to support the roof, while concrete columns support the slabs (second floor). I will also use fibreglass columns to decorate the outside of the building.Slab for the Foyer roofHollow Core SlabsCasted Concrete SlabsDescription:Hollow core slabs are the most used type precast flooring and roofing due to its reduced weight, cost-effectiveness and short construction time. The hollow slabs have a longitudinal core which offers strong support while being lighter in weight than other types of slabs. Less products are used to make these slabs due to it being hollow, thus these slabs are cheaper than others. The slabs arrive ready to install. The construction is not affected by the weather. The Hollow core slabs can also be used as the flooring solution to create the different levels for the seating in the auditorium.Self-cast concrete slabs are built on the site using formwork which is a boxed construction into which wet concrete is poured. The slab is usually reinforced, thus the rebars are positioned within the formwork before the concrete is poured. For a suspended slab, the formwork is shaped like a tray which is supported by temporary scaffolds until the concrete is set.Advantages:Good Sound InsulationThe holes in the slab can be used for electrical wiring or plumbingLightweightEasy to install as slabs hook in to each other Quick to installSturdyNo complicated machinery needed to castCan be cheaper than pre-cast slabsNo limit to designEvaluation:I am going to use hollow core slabs because it makes the laying of electrical wiring and plumbing easier. The hollow core slabs also have a very good insulation which is good for auditorium purposes. When productions are in progress, it will not affect the second floor/offices.Bathrooms [CODE D]CubiclesToiletsOption 1Option 2Option 3EvaluationOption 1Option 2Evaluation Urinal – Final OptionKirkBuild System 1NWash Down Wall HungCallas UrinalFixture name:Toilet PartitionKirkBuild System 1NKirkBuild System 3AAD1Wash Down Wall HungClose Coupled ToiletD2D3 Supplier:iFubaKirkBuildKirkBuilsI chose these cubicles because they have an attractive laminate finish. The staircase is not going to be open to the public, therefore, it does not have to be visually inviting. However, the staircase has to support the overall style of the auditorium. This can be done either by creating texture in the concrete, by adding visually appealing balusters or by hiding the staircase behind a wall or visually appealing panel that can also act as the railing.Visually appealingWeather resistantLightweightNatural stone colourCan be applied over brick, concrete, blocks or woodRiven cladding has refined, yet natural lookDisadvantages:Not visually appealingNot very durableExtra cost for finish (cement)Noisy when being usedNot visually appealingSize makes installation a long and difficult process, therefore, entire building should not be coveredRelevance:The concrete staircase is durable and will thus require little maintenance. The staircase is not going to be open to the public, therefore, it does not have to be visually inviting. However, the staircase has to support the overall style of the auditorium. The wooden staircase looks very sophisticated and hardly takes up any space at all. The staircase is only going to be used privately, thus the expense of a wooden staircase is not necessary. A cheaper solution such as concrete could thus be used instead. This is very similar to a concrete staircase as both are durable and not exactly visually appealing. However, as the look of the staircase is not necessary, the brick staircase is a good and cost-effective solution. The metal staircase does its job well as it is strong and hard wearing. However, the sound that is caused when climbing metal stairs is very noisy. A noisy staircase will not work well in an auditorium that needs as little sound as possible during performances or meetings.Riven cladding has a refined, yet natural look. It looks extremely elegant when shared with walls that have a concrete finish. The individual colour of the concrete complements the riven cladding extremely well. Riven cladding is a long process to install, therefore, it is necessary to only cover parts of the building with this type of cladding. The cladding can also be used inside, therefore, it can be used to connect the outer style with the interior style.Outer Wall FinishingRoofingOption 2Option 3EvaluationOption 1Option 2 Option 3All three options will add beauty to a building. Therefore, as I design, I will keep these options in mind and I will pick and choose which options I want to use. For example, if glass walls are used, the rest of the exterior should be plain in order to complement the glass, or graphic concrete can be used.
