K-3 Reading Assessment Considerations

K-3 Reading Assessment Considerations

SY 2022-2023

The K-3 Reading Assessment Considerations document provides guidance for identifying an appropriate assessment screener for your students.

Acadience Reading (Voyager Sopris Learning)

Grades: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Acadience Reading was formerly known as DIBELS Next, which is an earlier version of DIBELS 8th (included with Amplify mClass).

Dyslexia

Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) and Letter Naming Fluency (LNF) risk indicators are available

Predictor/Screener only for grades K-1.

aimswebPlus (Pearson) No additional considerations

Grade Levels: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

Dyslexia

Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) screening is available as an optional add-on measure for PK-

Predictor/Screener 3; there may be an additional cost for other dyslexia-specific screeners.

Amira (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)

Grade Levels: K, 1, 2, 3

HMH Into Reading ELA curriculum can access links directly through Amira's Diagnostic Reports. However, the purchase of HMH Into Reading is not required to use Amira.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia Risk Indicator (DRI) measures a student's risk of dyslexia, based on grade-appropriate

Predictor/Screener tasks [including rapid automatized naming (RAN), letter sounds, blending, and/or word reading]

that have been validated for identifying risk of language impairments.

DRA3 (Pearson)

Grade Levels: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

DRA3 only assesses the following domains in kindergarten: oral reading fluency; printed language concepts; reading engagement (does not directly measure phonological awareness, letter naming fluency, letter-sound association).

Dyslexia

Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) screening for dyslexia is not available with DRA3.

Predictor/Screener

FastBridge Suite (Illuminate Education)

Grade Levels: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

Suite (called FASTtrack Reading solution) combines 2 of the following 3 assessments to provide both screening and diagnostic information:

aReading (grades K-12): assesses foundational skills as a screener only CBMreading (grades 1-8): assesses oral reading fluency as a screener and for progress monitoring earlyReading (grades K-1): assesses initial reading skills as a screener and for progress monitoring To meet the criteria set forth by the Nebraska Department of Education, it is recommended that aReading, CBMReading, and Early Reading be used conjointly.

Dyslexia

Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) screening for dyslexia is included in the earlyReading

Predictor/Screener assessment for grades K-1 only.

i-Ready (Curriculum Associates)

Grade Levels: K, 1, 2, 3

i-Ready Assessment includes the following components, of which the publisher recommends the Diagnostic and Early Reading Tasks to meet all criteria:

i-Ready Diagnostic (grades K-3): assesses comprehensive skills; adaptive i-Ready Early Reading Tasks (grades K-3): assesses phonological awareness, encoding, and fluency-

related skills; complements Diagnostic i-Ready Oral Reading Fluency (grades 1-3): assesses grade-level reading fluency as a benchmark and for

progress monitoring To meet the criteria set forth by the Nebraska Department of Education, it is recommended that i-Ready Diagnostic, iReady Early Reading Tasks and i-Ready Oral Reading Fluency be used conjointly.

Dyslexia

Data to screen for dyslexia is provided through specific Early Reading Tasks; requires teachers

Predictor/Screener to engage in a screening process for specific students.

ISIP Reading (Istation) No additional considerations

Grade Levels: K, 1, 2, 3

Dyslexia

Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) screening for dyslexia is included.

Predictor/Screener

MAP Suite (NWEA)

Grade Levels: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

MAP Suite for Early Learning includes the following adaptive assessments: MAP Reading Fluency (grades PK-5; can be used for grades 6-8): assesses foundational reading skills, oral reading fluency, and literal comprehension; use advised to guide instructional planning MAP Growth Reading (grades K-12): assesses deeper reading comprehension (includes some assessment of foundational skills); use advised for evaluation

To meet the criteria set forth by the Nebraska Department of Education, it is recommended that MAP Growth Reading and MAP Reading Fluency are paired.

First grade students taking the Foundational Skills whose performance in sentence reading fluency indicates readiness for passage reading, can be assigned a passages-only test form as well to gather fluency data.

Students taking the adaptive oral reading whose performance in sentence reading fluency routes them to the passage reading will not have data for foundational reading skills.

If students are still flagged in MAP Reading Fluency as of Spring 1st grade, it may be most appropriate for those students to continue to be tested in MAP Reading Fluency during 2nd grade (at least fall).

MAP Reading Fluency may be appropriate for 2nd or 3rd grade students for progress monitoring in foundational reading skills when they are below the threshold for NSCAS Growth or MAP Growth Reading 2-5.

Students taking the NSCAS Growth in grade 3 can use that score in lieu of MAP Growth.

Dyslexia Predictor/Screener

Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) screener for dyslexia is included in MAP Reading Fluency for grades K-3. Dyslexia screener test form can be used in place of the foundational skills benchmark should the district also want to have RAN data. There is no need to test a student in both during the same term.

mCLASS with DIBELS 8th Edition (Amplify Education)

Grade Levels: K, 1, 2, 3

The University of Oregon's Center for Teaching and Learning is the creator of DIBELS. mCLASS is the licensed digital provider of DIBELS 8th Edition assessment. This digital platform includes administration and scoring, reporting, and instruction.

To meet the criteria set forth by the Nebraska Department of Education, it is recommended that the DIBLES 8th Edition assessment be used through mCLASS.

Dyslexia

mCLASS with DIBELS 8th serves as both a universal screener and dyslexia screener; mCLASS also

Predictor/Screener includes an optional Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) measure for screening dyslexia.

Star Reading Suite (Renaissance)

Grade Levels: K, 1, 2, 3

Star Reading Suite includes the following assessments: Star Early Literacy (grades K-3): assesses early literacy skills Star Reading (grades K-12): assesses comprehension and vocabulary Students move from Star Early Literacy to Star Reading as they develop as independent readers Star CBM Reading (grades K-6): assesses curriculum-based measures of targeted skills

To meet the criteria set forth by the Nebraska Department of Education, combine Star Early Literacy or Star Reading with Star CBM Reading for screening and progress monitoring. The Star Reading Suite only meets Nebraska's criteria if assessments are paired.

Dyslexia

Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) measure for screening dyslexia included in Star CBM.
