The Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat is a vital interface between global policies in the economic, social and environmental spheres and national action. The Department works in three main interlinked areas: (i) it compiles, generates and analyses a wide range of economic, social and environmental data and information on which States Members of the United Nations draw to review common problems and take stock of policy options; (ii) it facilitates the negotiations of Member States in many intergovernmental bodies on joint courses of action to address ongoing or emerging global challenges; and (iii) it advises interested Governments on the ways and means of translating policy frameworks developed in United Nations conferences and summits into programmes at the country level and, through technical assistance, helps build national capacities.

The Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs provides the international community with timely and accessible population data and analysis of population trends and development outcomes for all countries and areas of the world. To this end, the Division undertakes regular studies of population size and characteristics and of all three components of population change (fertility, mortality and migration). Founded in 1946, the Population Division provides substantive support on population and development issues to the United Nations General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and the Commission on Population and Development. It also leads or participates in various interagency coordination mechanisms of the United Nations system. The work of the Division also contributes to strengthening the capacity of Member States to monitor population trends and to address current and emerging population issues.

PREFACE

The 2019 Revision of the World Population Prospects represents the latest global set of demographic estimates and projections prepared by the Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat. It constitutes the twenty-sixth round of global population estimates and projections produced by the Population Division since 1951.

This volume of the 2019 Revision presents the comprehensive tables of the official United Nations population estimates and projections, displaying key demographic indicators for selected periods or dates from 1950 to 2100, for the world, development groups, income groups, regions, subregions, and countries or areas with more than 90,000 inhabitants in 2019. For countries or areas with fewer than 90,000 inhabitants in 2019, only figures related to population size and growth are provided. In all data tables, figures for 1950-2015 are estimates and those thereafter are projections. The projections are presented for the medium fertility variant, lower and upper 95 per cent prediction intervals, and constant-fertility variant. A companion World Population Prospects 2019: Highlights report (ST/ESA/SER.A/423) provides key findings and summarises key population trends described by the estimates and projections presented in World Population Prospects 2019.

To depict the uncertainty of future demographic trends, the Population Division has developed probabilistic projections for all countries and areas of the world. It should be stressed that making projections to 2100 is subject to a high degree of uncertainty, especially at the country level. In that regard, users are invited to focus not only on the outcomes of the medium variant, which for each country corresponds to the median of several thousand projected trajectories of specific demographic components, but also to the associated prediction intervals that provide an assessment of the uncertainty inherent in such projections. Detailed information on the 80 per cent and 95 per cent uncertainty bounds for different components at the country level is available on the website of the Population Division, (also see: ), and associated data table () and country profiles (see Volume 2: Demographic Profiles and ).

The detailed results of the 2019 Revision are made available through a variety of media. The website of the Population Division provides access to an extended set of data organized in Excel and ASCII files () as well as to an interactive database that enables users to obtain specific information on selected countries or regions ().

The results of the 2019 Revision are presented in two volumes. In addition to this volume, the second volume contains demographic profiles presenting time series and plots of selected indicators, covering the period from 1950 to 2100, for each country or area, as well as for development groups, income groups, regions and subregions. The second volume also provides a brief description of the empirical data used and the methods applied to derive the estimates of population and components of demographic change (fertility, child, adult and overall mortality, international migration) for each country or area for the period 1950-2020. Further details about the respective data sources used for each country or area are available online interactively () with a tabular version of this information also available for download (). Further details about the methodology used to prepare the estimates and projections is explained in a companion report (World Population Prospects 2019: Methodology of the United Nations Population Estimates and Projections).

In preparing the 2019 Revision, the Population Division benefitted from the collaboration of the regional commissions, especially the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, and of specialized agencies and other relevant bodies of the United Nations system, including UNAIDS, UNICEF, WHO, UNHCR and the World Bank, notably for under-five mortality estimates through the UN Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN-IGME). The Statistics Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, through its United Nations Demographic Yearbook and accompanying databases, provided access to official national population statistics used in the preparation of the 2019 Revision. The Population Division also acknowledges the assistance and cooperation of the organizations responsible for the Demographic and Health Surveys, the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys, the Human Mortality Database and Human Life Table Database (UC Berkeley, MPIDR and INED), the Human Fertility Database and Human Fertility Collection (MPIDR and VID), the Latin American
