The course will illuminate connections between our lives and those of our ancestors faced during their unique experiences in American history. Students will uncover patterns of behavior, identify historical themes and trends, explore historical concepts, and understand the correlation of our past to today’s current events.Students will be able to refine their comprehension and critical thinking skills as they compare, evaluate, and uncover the history and culture of the United States by analyzing primary source documents. The course will be taught in a chronological time frame, and will be aligned to the United States History Florida Framework. United States History is a state tested subject, and an end of course exam (EOC) will be given at the end of the year that is worth 30% of the students class grade. The State of Florida creates the exam and enforces the EOC exam grade policy.Classroom EnvironmentThere will be student-centered learning and activity-based instruction every day. Learning will be interactive and will vary from lecture, class discussions, small group and individual work.Class Vision:History is not just a memorization of facts. The goal of this course is for students to refine their comprehension, critical thinking, writing, and reading skills to understand and analyze past events and relate our past to current events of today.To allow students to have a general understanding of the history of our past and to gain knowledge to become active and knowledgeable citizens and to prepare students for their future.1466090052197000-13970052197000Class Goals for ALL Students:Improve communication skills.Improve reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.Pass the United States History EOC*Assessment of Student Work:There will be daily objectives that will be measured after each lesson and collectively at the beginning of each week. Every week, students will be assessed whether the objective has been met with clarity and the teacher will provide feedback.Grades will be determined by the following methods:Completion of assigned work (worksheets, projects, research essays): (Points vary)Students will have the opportunity to create and complete group projects, individual projects, maps, individual assignments, document based questions (DBQs), and short essays throughout the course. Each assignment is worth a different amount of points depending on the level and time of the task. I will give out a rubric and/or point indicator for each assignment.Homework: Homework will be given that is essential for class discussions and student success.Participation Points: (Notes and Class Participation).Students will receive a grade for participating in class. This includes keeping an updated organized notebook (3-ring binder) with all class materials present and taking quality notes. Students will also get participation points for actively engaging in class discussions.Pre-Tests: (Points vary)There will be a pre-test in the beginning of the year and in the beginning of certain units. The student is only graded on completeness. The pre-test is a good indicator of what the student already knows or does not know regarding a subject. A short quiz will be administered on the material covered each covered that week. Quizzes will be based on the class material that was recently covered to check for student understanding.Examinations: (Points vary) after the end of each unit there will be an exam on the unit. Exams will consist of multiple choice document analysis, short answer, and an essay question. The tests will be announced at least a week in advanced.
