UNITY CHURCH OF PEACE DONATES $500 TO CHARLOTTE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CARE'S S.H.A.R.E. SPOT

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (February 10, 2017) ? Unity Church of Peace in North Port recently donated $500 to S.H.A.R.E. Spot, a drop-in center for people with mental illnesses offering socialization, advocacy, and self-help.

"Unity Church of Peace donates to a local non-profit every quarter," said Carmen Oberoi, Church Trustee. "This quarter, we chose to donate to S.H.A.R.E. Spot because we know that someone has to be the voice for those who don't have one."

S.H.A.R.E. Spot is Charlotte Behavioral Health Care's drop-in center for people with severe, persistent mental illnesses. It is a peer run program that focuses on socialization, advocacy, and self-help for each member on their personal journey to recovery. It follows a clubhouse representation that is based on the recovery model in which includes these key components: Self-Direction, Individualized and Person-Centered, Empowerment, Holistic, Non-Linear, Strengths-Based, Peer Support, Respect, Responsibility and Hope.

"Through peer support, members gain self-esteem, learn to advocate for themselves, and become empowered to strive for recovery. Studies of drop-in centers have found that members who attend have a decrease in suicide rate, substance abuse, and hospitalization," said Cynthia Molina, S.H.A.R.E. Spot Activities Coordinator. "Our S.H.A.R.E. Spot is a powerful demonstration of the fact that people with mental illness can and do lead normal, productive lives."
