By now you have:

1. Visited colleges

2. Made a tentative list of colleges

3. Organized your list and reviewed the list with your parents/guardians

4. Checked to see if you have met all of the requirements needed to meet the application deadlines

5. Spoken to teachers about writing letters of recommendation

Application definitions:

1. Early Decision: The binding admission process where the student applies to his/her first choice school in the fall. If offered admission, student must withdraw all other applications from other schools. Typically, the early decision deadline is November 1.

2. Early Action: The non-binding admission process whereby the student applies to his/her first choice college in the fall. Typically, the early action deadline is November 15.

3. Restrictive Early Action: non-binding admission process which restricts students from applying to a binding early decision program at another college. However, students are free to apply to other early action and regular decision programs.

1. Rolling Admission: Students are offered or denied admission throughout the calendar year.

2. Priority Admission: Application given special consideration based on when the application is received by the college.

3. Regular Admission: Non-binding admission process where students apply in the winter, and learn of acceptance or denial in the spring.

Your counselor will:

1. See you (by appointment) as often as necessary

2. Complete the Secondary School Report on-line (do not give your counselor a hard copy)

3. Get feedback from your teachers to support the counselor recommendation

4. Write a comprehensive recommendation on your behalf

5. Submit all materials electronically or by US Postal Service

Student Responsibilities:

*Important: Steps 1 - 6 must be done prior to making your first request to send application materials. We cannot send any materials until these steps are completed.

1. Be sure to use your full legal name on all college-related forms

2. Sign the “Transcript Release Authorization” (last page of this booklet) and return it to Mrs. Gebhart. Students under the age of 18 must also have a parent/guardian sign

3. ALL students, including those not submitting the common app, must log onto and create a USER ID/PASSWORD

4. Log into NAVIANCE

5. Under “My Colleges/Colleges I am Applying To,” complete the IMPORTANT PRIVACY NOTICE FOR COMMON APPLICATION. You need a Common Application USER ID/PASSWORD to do this.

6. Under the “About Me” tab in Naviance, complete the Brag Sheet, Activities Resume and Parents’ Point of View

7. Make an appointment with your counselor by emailing them. Print your reply as your pass.

8. Arrange for teacher recommendation(s)

How to arrange teacher recommendations:

Ask in well in advance! Provide teacher recommendation form (if required) and a college list stating the schools you are applying to and whether or not you are submitting the common application, the school accepts electronic submission of documents, or regular mail. For schools that do not accept electronic documents (common application or docufide) please give a stamped - addressed envelope to your teacher for those institutions. Send a thank-you note to your teachers!

9. Complete required testing: SAT I, SAT II and/or ACT

10. Arrange to have test scores sent to each college from or

11. Rutgers applicants: You must ask your counselor for a copy of your transcript! You will need your state student ID (Rutgers calls this your “NJ Smart ID”) as well as all of your high school grades in order to complete the Rutgers application

12. Prospective Division I and II athletes: register with NCAA Clearinghouse at and submit a pink card for the NCAA to Mrs. Gebhart in Guidance. On the pink card please include your NCAA I.D. number.

When you are ready to send application materials to Colleges/Universities:

1. Check the specific application requirements (Rutgers applicants: this includes self-reporting your grades!)

2. Submit to your counselor a pink “Request to Submit Application Materials” card for every application at least 15 SCHOOL DAYS prior to the application deadline.

*** MHS will send out the materials for the first five cards that you give to guidance for free. Every additional card turned in (regardless of whether you end up applying to the school) will cost $2.00 each.***

3. Envelopes, college-specific forms and common application recommendation forms are not necessary; do not submit them to your counselor.

When the colleges/universities you applied to are asking for you mid-year grades:

Mrs. Gebhart will have an additional card in guidance for you to fill out after semester 1. On this card you will list the colleges/universities that are requesting that you send them mid-year grades and submit it to Mrs. Gebhart. Once grades are complete, Mrs. Gebhart will send out a mid-year report for you.

*** The grades you receive senior year still matter! A college/university can rescind your acceptance.***

A: No. Many college/universities send out those emails before they update their databases with the new materials they have received. Call the admissions office at the college/university and ask them if they have received it before asking your Guidance Counselor to send out the materials again.
