Course OverviewOur class will study a number of novels, short stories, plays, poems, historical texts, and non-fiction pieces by many different authors. We will explore concepts central to the study of literature such as plot, theme, symbolism, author’s style, genre, satire, regionalism, and historical context. You will complete a number of increasingly sophisticated pieces of writing related to the works we read, asking you to interpret, analyze, and evaluate the works of the various authors. You will be evaluated on each reading and will present to the class at times. In addition to the study of literature, we will also focus on the conventions of grammar and vocabulary in preparation for FSA, ACT and SAT testing. Course ObjectivesOverall, the course content is designed to help students read with an understanding of an author’s main idea, with sensitivity to technique, style, and inference; to write effectively, applying knowledge of the elements of fiction and nonfiction; to acquire new content and academic vocabulary and use it correctly in reading and writing; and to present work that demonstrates appropriate consideration of audience, purpose, and style. Additionally, Grade 10 is the year students need to pass the FSA Reading and Writing in order to satisfy their graduation requirement.
