INTERNATIONAL ADMISSIONS SCHEME / NON-JUPAS ADMISSIONS SCHEME ("IAS/NJ") FOR UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION IN SEPTEMBER 2018

GENERAL INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS

I) GENERAL INFORMATION

The procedures and information in this document apply to applicants with international/overseas qualification(s) or academic qualification(s) other than the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) and the Mainland National Joint College Entrance Examination / Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan National Joint College Entrance Examination (NJCEE). Applicants applying to the University on the strength of HKDSE or NJCEE result should submit their application through the JUPAS Office or the HKU Admissions Office (Mainland Admissions) respectively, instead of applying through the International Admissions Scheme / Non-JUPAS Admissions Scheme.

Applicants who require a student visa / entry permit to study in Hong Kong are regarded as non-local / international applicants.

Each applicant can only submit ONE application for admission in any one academic year, through any one of the admissions schemes, namely JUPAS, IAS/NJ#, Direct Admissions Scheme to Senior Year Places, and Admission of Undergraduate Students from the Mainland. Duplicate applications received by the University through the same or different admissions scheme(s) and/or system(s) will not be considered and all application fees paid are non-refundable.

(#IAS/NJ applicants may either submit the application through the HKU Admissions Office (International Undergraduate Admissions) or the Common Application system.)

Applicants who are currently enrolled in a full-time bachelor's degree programme funded by the University Grants Committee (UGC) in a local tertiary institution in Hong Kong should also apply through IAS/NJ. Please note however that following UGC's guidelines, inter-institutional transfer is generally discouraged. The University is only able to consider applicants with excellent results and their admission is subject to special approval by the University on the basis of over-enrolment. Current undergraduate students of the University who wish to apply for a transfer to another curriculum should write to the Registrar (c/o the Academic Services Office), instead of applying through IAS/NJ.

Some undergraduate programmes of the University have set aside a fixed number of senior year student places for admission of sub-degree (i.e. Associate Degree or Higher Diploma) graduates. Applicants for those places should apply through the Direct Admissions Scheme to Senior Year Places instead of IAS/NJ. Please click here for details.

Incorrect or misrepresented information given in the application will disqualify the application and any offer(s) made by the University will be withdrawn.

Closing Date

Main Round application will be closed on November 16, 2017 (12:00 noon Hong Kong Time). Admission offers will be made starting from December 2017/January 2018 onwards. Students who receive an offer of admission are normally required to accept the offer within two to three weeks.

Applications submitted after the Main Round deadline will be considered as late applications, which will be accepted before July 15, 2018 (12:00 noon Hong Kong Time). As undergraduate places are being filled all the time, you may wish to apply for admission as early as possible.

Please note that an acknowledgment e-mail will be sent to you immediately after successful submission of the online application. If you do not receive the acknowledgment e-mail, you may check with the Admissions Office by phone at (852) 3917 5886 or by e-mail to admissions@hku.hk.

Application Fee

All applicants are required to pay an application fee in an amount of HKD$450 and the fee is non-refundable.

Choice of Curriculum

You should only submit ONE application for admission in any one academic year, but you are permitted to indicate up to three choices of curriculum in your application. Before proceeding with your application, please check the University entrance requirements and the programme specific requirements here to make sure that you are eligible for admission to the curriculum you wish to apply for.

Changes to the choice(s) of curriculum will not be allowed after submission of the application. Please be sure that the degree curriculum you wish to apply for has/have been correctly chosen in your application.

Interviews and Results

You may be called for an interview or test at any time after submission of the application (a tentative interview schedule is made available at here for reference). Please however note that not all applicants are required to attend an interview or test and not all programmes conduct these assessments; being invited to an interview or test is not an indicator of the chance of admission. You will be notified by the Faculty / Programme Office of the arrangements for any interview or test individually, if applicable.

You will be informed by e-mail if you are offered admission to the University and you are required to pay a deposit (currently HK$10,000, but subject to change) on your acceptance of the offer by the date specified in the offer letter or the offer will be withdrawn automatically. You can also view your application status using your registered application account. Candidates should consider their application as unsuccessful if they do not hear from the University by the end of August 2018. Please note that all documents will not be returned once submitted, and will be destroyed if the application is unsuccessful.

Composition Fees The composition fees for local and non-local students are different. According to the definition laid down by the University Grants Committee, non-local students are persons entering Hong Kong for the purpose of education with a student visa / entry permit issued by the Director of Immigration. The annual composition fee for local students admitted in the academic year 2017-2018 is HK$42,100, and that for 2018-2019 has yet to be decided pending the Government's advice but we do not expect it to differ significantly from the current fee. The composition fee for non-local students admitted in 2018-2019 is HK$161,000. Entrance Scholarship All applicants will be considered for entrance scholarships. Separate application is not required. The scholarship result will be announced along with the offer of admission, if applicable. Selection for entrance scholarships is based on academic merits with consideration of non-academic achievements. HKU entrance scholarships are supported by generous donors, external organizations and governmental bodies in Hong Kong as well as overseas. The entrance scholarship for top-ranking students may go up to a value equivalent to a full tuition fee waiver plus an accommodation scholarship and a living allowance per year. Apart from entrance scholarship, the University also awards hundreds of merit-based scholarships that students can apply for upon the commencement of study ().
