RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA), Research Assistant June 2006-July 2007

Sex and Drugs Study: Under the direction of Matt Mutchler, Ph.D. APLA Director of Research, the APLA and Gay Men’s Health Crisis research teams are examining the relationship between drug use and sexual practices among young (18-24) men of color in Los Angeles and New York. This is a qualitative research project that employs survey and interview methods. Responsibilities include Recruiting participants, administering surveys and conducting interviews.

Gay Boy Talk Study: Under the direction of Matt Mutchler, Ph.D., APLA Director of Research, the APLA research team is examining the ways that young Latino, Asian, White and Multi-racial/ethnic gay men discuss issues of sexual health with their best gay male friends or heterosexual female friends. This is a qualitative research project which employs surveys and interview methods. Responsibilities include: recruiting participants, administering surveys and conducting interviews.

Center for Religion and Civic Culture, University of Southern California 2002-2004 Research Assistant

The USC research team, under the direction of Jon Orr, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of Religion, was part of national research team with three other universities under the Pew Charitable Trusts’ Faith and Service Technical Education Network (FASTEN). This quantitative and qualitative research project assessed effective and promising practices of faith-based human service organizations, with an emphasis on program strategies, organizational models, and collaborative partnerships. Responsibilities included: Developing survey and interview instruments, conducting formal interviews in the Western U.S. area, ethnographic field research, coding and analysis of data using Atlas.ti, and report writing. I was also the USC communication point person responsible for maintaining effective communication with the other universities involved in the project.

Department of Sociology, University of Southern California 2000-2003 Research Assistant for Professor Judith Stacey, Ph.D.

Under the supervision of Judith Stacey, Barbara Streisand Chair of Gender Studies, I conducted ethnographic fieldwork including participant observation, informal interviews, and taking field notes at several venues and events related to the formation of intimate relationships among gay men. The research focused heavily on experiences of gay fatherhood.
