2017 Editor Application Due to Editors-in-Chief (themidwayreview@) by December 24th, 2017.____________________________________Information & Editor ResponsibilitiesThe Midway Review is a journal of cultural, social, political, and literary essays published in print and online once each quarter at the University of Chicago. Its hallmark is writing that is both intelligent and original yet accessible to a generally educated audience. The Review was started in its current form in 2005 by students in the Fundamentals: Issues and Texts undergraduate major and retains that program’s interdisciplinary nature and regard for ideas and civil discourse across academic departments and the political spectrum. Recent essays cover philosophy, literature, religion, history, politics, sociology, music, sports, pop culture, and psychology, discussing topics ranging from the crisis in Syria to gay members in the Boy Scouts, doppelgangers to beer snobs, Elena Ferrante to Japanese literature in translation. Our editorial team is composed of five to eight staff editors under the direction of the editors-in-chief and managing editor, with additional editors specifically responsible for design and promotion. Responsibilities of staff editors include: read all essay submissions, and discuss and vote on publishing essays with other editors; work individually with authors to sharpen arguments and prose and clarify questions and concerns raised during editorial meetings; gather images from the library under the direction of the design editor; copy edit articles in their final layout; and help distribute print issues once each quarter.
