The University of Illinois System is the state's leading and most comprehensive public higher education system with three universities: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Illinois at Chicago, and University of Illinois at Springfield, as well as the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System, known as UI Health.

The U of I System serves the people of Illinois through a shared commitment to excellence in teaching, research, public service, economic development, and healthcare. System faculty, staff, and students share their knowledge and expertise and System resources with citizens in every corner of the state through more than 800 public service and outreach programs and resources.

The System's three universities attract some of the nation's most talented students to hundreds of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs ? many of them ranked among the best in the United States. Faculty members are world leaders in research and discovery and contribute new knowledge and life-changing breakthroughs to a variety of fields.

LOCATIONS

In addition to the main campus locations in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago, and Springfield, the System has teaching and service facilities, including regional campuses and extension offices, located throughout the state. The UIC College of Medicine offers programs at the regional campuses in Peoria and Rockford. The UIC College of Pharmacy offers a graduate program in Rockford, and the UIC College of Nursing has satellite programs in Peoria, Quad Cities, Rockford, Springfield, and Urbana. The University of Illinois at Springfield offers academic programs at the Peoria Center, and all three universities offer classes at University Center of Lake County. Online classes expand educational opportunities for students worldwide.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM AROUND THE SYSTEM

``Illinois Natural History Survey paleontologist Sam Heads discovered the world's oldest mushroom, which was preserved in limestone, while digitizing a collection of fossils from the Crato Formation of Brazil.

``UIC's Freshwater Lab hosts summits of researchers and community and government leaders from the U.S. and Canada to address critical issues impacting the Great Lakes region.

``The U of I System consistently ranks in the Top 20 of universities worldwide for number of U.S. patents granted, according to an annual report from the National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association.

``More than 10,000 visitors of all ages were able to learn about research from Urbana's Carl R. Woese Institute of Genomic Biology over three days in Chicago last spring at the Field Museum of Natural History.

``Students and faculty from UIS and the Universidade Estadual de Maringa in Brazil studied aquatic ecology in Illinois and Brazil this past summer.

``Luis Alberto Urrea, professor of English at UIC, was one of eight recipients of a 2017 American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature.

`` is a new website to assist students wishing to transfer from an Illinois community college to an Illinois four-year institution, which includes a tool to map how specific credits will transfer. It is a project of MyCreditsTransfer, a program sponsored by the U of I System and the Illinois Board of Higher Education.

``In 2017, officials from the Cuban Ministry of Health spent five months collaborating with UI Health leaders, to improve health in underresourced communities through improvements in community-based care.

``The Chamber Singers, the premier choral ensemble from Urbana, traveled to Europe last spring as an exchange with the University of Vienna choir. The group performed in Vienna, Budapest, and Freistadt, Austria.

``The Horizon League champion UIC Flames had a record six players selected during the 2017 Major League Baseball draft.

``Lizzie Roehrs, a UIS communications major, partnered with the Illinois State Military Museum to bring her love of military history and video games to life at an interactive "War Games" event at the museum.

``I-Share, the online public catalog system for the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI), provides online management of 37.8 million items from 90 libraries throughout the state serving 600,000 students, faculty, and staff.

``Urbana startup OceanComm is developing new technology that uses ultrasound to bring WiFi to the deep ocean, to allow for better subsea exploration and industry advancement.

``Nearly 15,000 K-12 Central Illinois students attend a "Class Act" daytime performing arts performance at the Sangamon Auditorium at UIS each year, thanks to local sponsors.

``UIC biomedical visualization graduate student Esther Ng won the 2017 National Science Foundation poster contest, thanks in part to a collaboration with a UIC biological sciences professor.

``The U of I System is working with the State of Illinois to integrate next-generation technology to improve efficiencies, safeguard citizens, and accelerate innovation through a "Smart State" partnership. The collaboration is intended to help grow the state's economy, improve quality of life, and retain and attract residents.
