Dear Dietetic Internship Committee,

Dear Dietetic Internship Committee,

Let me introduce myself as a recent graduate from the Dietetic program at Colorado State University, and a Registered Dietetic Technician at Rose Medical Center located in Denver Colorado. I am a highly driven individual with a passion for all aspects of dietetics, and nutrition. Currently I am enrolled with the University of Phoenix to obtain an MBA, which will help me in my ultimate goal of becoming a clinical dietary manager at a major hospital or institution. With my work experience, education, and constant drive to better myself, I set myself apart from other dietetic internship applicants. With this personal statement I hope to demonstrate my passion, skills, and experience in the field of nutrition and dietetics, giving specific examples why I will be a perfect fit for your program.

My passion for dietetics came at an early age, and stems from several sources including early visits to the dietitian's office with my grandma; a victim of diabetes. It was fascinating to me how the dietitian was so knowledgeable about food, and seemed to have the answers to everything nutrition related. My fascination for nutrition peaked in high school, while participating in varsity sports including wrestling, which requires a keen knowledge of nutrition, and weight control. Integrating this passion of nutrition with school, I was able to research the subject more in-depth, honing in on the basics, and even creating a high school senior project dedicated to understanding how demographics effect what foods individuals are more likely to consume. Shortly after graduation I was accepted into the dietetics program at Colorado State University, and began my undergraduate degree.

The knowledge I gained from my Bachelors degree at Colorado State University, and the experiences of college life have been crucial to my success as an individual. Growing up with parents who work in the fields of engineering, and management meant that I was exposed little to the sciences of biology and chemistry, but had a leg up in mathematics, and social sciences. Starting off my college career I struggled grasping all the minute details in my chemistry courses, while excelling in mathematics, and nutrition related courses. I have always been a person who is up for a challenge, and will push myself through any obstacle using my strongest values of working hard, studying, and never giving up to succeed. Applying these values to my college career, I managed to balance being on the wrestling team, holding a job, and earning grades that allowed me to graduate with my Bachelor's degree.

Since finishing my undergraduate program, I have been busy working in the field of nutrition and dietetics, and continuing my education in order to reach my long term goal of becoming a clinical dietary manager. Shortly after moving back to my hometown of Denver Colorado, I started working for the Kroger Company as a Nutrition Specialist. This was a position dedicated to the marketing and sales of premium vitamins, naturopathic, and homeopathic remedies. This position required a general knowledge of nutrition, as well as the passion to learn more about, and research a variety of supplements, and their benefits. This job was a great experience for me, as it allowed me to work directly with a variety of customers, answering any nutrition related questions they had from the benefits of a fish oil supplement, to debunking some common misconceptions about "fad" diets, and everything in-between. I worked full time for this company for just over a year, in this time I also earned my Dietetic Technician Registration through the Commission on Dietetic Registration. After working just over one year as a Nutrition Specialist, I stepped down as an employee for Kroger, and started my new position as a Dietetic Technician for Rose medical Center, and enrolled in a Masters of Business Administration program at the University of Phoenix.

Currently I employed full time as a Dietetic Technician at Rose Medical Center. This position has allowed me to gain a greater understanding of the inner workings of hospitals, and continue to grow as a professional in dietetics. The main functions of my job include working with the dietitians, and medical staff to ensure all patients receive food based upon their therapeutic diet needs, using medical software to enter and correct any diet discrepancies. I Monitor the caloric intake of patients, as well as calculate specific macronutrient intakes when necessary. I also perform basic counseling to a diverse population of patients, and help them select appropriate food items for their therapeutic diet. I have also used Microsoft programs to create simple menus specific for each therapeutic diet. It has been a great experience working for this facility, and a diverse group of patients, and I hope to further my career by embarking on a dietetic internship.

There is a famous quote from Mohandas Gandhi that says "Be the change you wish to see in the world," I see a population that is currently struggling with obesity, and overall health. As a Dietitian I hope to make a difference in the lives of all those who seek nutritional advice. Thank you for time and consideration.
