CalPrep Academy School: A Model for Urban Education

Preparing under-represented students become college bound and college ready

Hayward—On Thursday April 16th at 8.30 a.m., Sheila Jordan, Superintendent of Alameda County Schools, will be joined by ACOE Board President Jacki Fox Ruby and Board member Ken Berrick, to visit the California College Preparatory Academy (CalPrep), located at 2125 Jefferson Avenue, Berkeley, CA.  CalPrep is a charter school collaborative between the Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE), the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), Berkeley City College, and Aspire Public Schools.

“I feel privileged to work with the University, assisting them in their quest to establish a lab school demonstrating that every student who is motivated, can be a successful student.” said Sheila Jordan, Superintendent of Alameda County Schools. “We at ACOE, are very proud to be the sponsoring organization of Cal Prep. The school provides a unique opportunity for UC Berkeley to work first hand with neighborhood children, and provides an environment that fosters a college bound culture of high expectations and academic achievement. I commend Aspire Schools, for working in partnership with the University in providing a quality education for every child, every day.”

“We are delighted that the Alameda County Office of Education is collaborating with Aspire Public Schools and UC Berkeley in promoting this model for urban education that is propelling students to high academic achievement.  Most of our students will be the first in their families to attend college. Now they know they can and we are proud of our work in closing the opportunity gaps, to help them succeed!” - Gail Kaufman, Deputy Director of UC Berkeley’s Center for Educational Partnerships.
