There All the Time

By Marilyn Houghton Kayton

We were at the airport to pick up Grandma Marie. Our two daughters were exited. They had helped clean the guest bedroom and had packed a welcome basket with magazines, shampoo, and a package of crackers and peanut butter.

Grandma rushed out of the door carrying her purse and her carry-on. Her face was glowing, and she said, “it was there, it was there all the time!”

AS we followed the crowd to pick up her suitcase on the revolving rack, she told us, “As I left Malvern, Iowa, to catch the plane at the Omaha Airport, the clouds were low and dark, and a drizzle had started. My spirits were dark, and I felt discouraged. As I came closed to the airport, ice crystals were falling. I got on the plane and settled in, and as the airplane taxied down the runway, the pilot welcomed us. We flew upward through the clouds and I saw … THE SUN. It was there all the time, even when the dark clouds covered the golden light.”

Just like the sun, God’s love is there all the time—even when the clouds of doubt and fear hide the light.

Pray for those for whom the clouds are covering God’s love.

On March 14-15, the Columbia community will host a dialogue on “What is the Future of Faith?” as we welcome Dr. Phyllis Tickle, author of The Great Emergence, a conversation of what Christianity has and will become in the 21st century.

Dr. Tickle is the founding editor of the religion department at Publisher’s Weekly, and is the author of more than two dozen books. The event will include sessions for church leaders, university students and faculty, community members and anyone interested in discovering more about faith and culture.

Funded and hosted by Columbia’s downtown congregations, centers and departments of the University of Missouri, and other sponsors, this event will engage our entire community and campuses in a robust and thoughtful conversation about spirituality, engaging the culture, and the changing role of the church.

Flyers are available at the church and details are available on-line at

Walk the WALK

Our WALK ministry gets underway again in March.

The WALK exposes people to the experience of traveling from place to place throughout Columbia to meet basic needs: food, clothing, shelter, etc. Groups should allow 3 hours for the full experience. The first 30 minutes provide an introduction of what to expect. The walk itself takes about 2 hours with a number of stops along the way. We will see a number of agencies in Columbia that provide services and hear a little about them. Back at the church, we will reflect on what we saw, heard and felt along the way.

Suggested donation is $15/person. Groups are scheduled on Sunday afternoons, March 9 at 2:30 pm and March 16 at 12:15 pm. To reserve a spot, or schedule another time, contact Pastor Meg at pastormeg@ or (573) 673-6928.
