All applicants must meet the University’s English language competence requirement to be considered eligible for admission. However, currently there are no safeguards within the University Policy on Admission: Coursework (UP16/5) to enable the University to take appropriate measures to address cases where subsequent evidence is available to demonstrate that the student’s English language ability is insufficient. It is therefore proposed that the University Policy on Admission: Coursework (UP16/5) be amended to incorporate this safeguard. Attached (Attachment G) for members’ consideration are proposed amendments to the University Policy on Admission: Coursework (UP16/5) with regard to English language competence requirements. The Chair recommends that the Committee consider endorsing the proposed changes to the University Policy on Admission: Coursework (UP16/5), as set out in the agenda attachment, and referring it to the Education Committee for approval, effective immediately. not-for-degree study: Pre-master’s PROGRAM (PMP) in business from 2017 – REF: F17/905The Business School in collaboration with Taylors College have proposed the Pre-Master’s Program as a non-award program which will become a pathway for domestic and international students into the following selected master’s courses:Master of Applied Finance (coursework) (42560); Master of Business Information and Logistics Management (coursework) (41670);Master of Commerce (coursework) (41680); Master of Human Resources and Employment Relations (coursework) (41660);Master of Marketing (coursework) (41690); Master of Professional Accounting (coursework) (40610); andMaster of Public Policy (Coursework or coursework and dissertation) (42580). Members are advised that admission into the above master’s courses require an applicant to have: (1) met the University’s English Language competence requirement, and (2) successfully completed a bachelor’s degree qualification or equivalent with a WAM of at least 60 per cent. Members will recall that at the March 2017 meeting, the Curriculum Committee agreed that the PMP proposal be placed on hold until further discussion with relevant stakeholders and the Business School (see attached minute extract). Further to that agreement, discussions with various stakeholders, including the Chair of Academic Board, across the University have occurred. To this end, members will note that the PMP is proposed as a 4 unit non-award master’s enabling course to build language and study/foundational skills, which is aimed at providing entry into selected master’s courses based on the following alternative pathways and admission requirements:Students applying with the followingRequirements for admission ELCBachelor’s WAM6.0 - 6.4 (no band < 5.5)60.0Successful completion of a PMP specialising in Business with a WAM of 60 per cent6.0 – 6.4 (no band < 5.5)< 60.01.
