The commission unanimously approved a resolution transferring the site at 625 Shadow Lane to the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) and UNLV. The medical education building, which will be located near the university’s Shadow Lane Campus and University Medical Center (UMC), will be the primary academic home for the school and its teaching, research and clinical programs. A ceremonial deed-signing event on the Shadow Lane site followed the commission meeting. Signing for the transfer of the land were Clark County Commission Chairman Steve Sisolak, UMC Board Chairman and Commissioner Lawrence Weekly, Regent Michael Wixom, vice chairof the NSHE Board of Regents, and UNLV President Len Jessup. Today’s commission vote was the last in a series of steps that included a decision on June 10 by the Board of Regents to accept the land.“Las Vegas has a severe shortage of doctors, creating long waits for patients, emergency rooms that are filled to capacity, and a diminished quality of life for our residents,” said Commission Chairman Steve Sisolak. “A Las Vegas-based, UNLV medical school will bring us more doctors, improve access to care for our citizens and an overall improvement in the Las Vegas health care landscape.” He said Clark County has just 185 physicians for every 100,000 residents – almost half the national average. “The County and UMC are pleased and honored to partner with UNLV to make the medical school a reality.”The UNLV School of Medicine, on track to welcome its charter class next summer, is creating a center of excellence and innovation for medical education, patient care, and research to serve the health care needs of Southern Nevada’s diverse urban community. Regent James Dean Leavitt said the collaboration with Clark County and UMC represents a key step in the fulfillment of the Regents’ original vision for the development of a top-notch UNLV School of Medicine. “We appreciate Clark County and UMC’s support of this vision and we look forward to a long-term relationship that will help improve health care for all of Southern Nevada,” said Leavitt. “This partnership is indicative of the overwhelming collaboration and commitment in Southern Nevada and statewide to make the UNLV School of Medicine truly world class,” said UNLV President Len Jessup. “Its impact stretches beyond the physical development of a medical school and academic health center. It represents a true community benefit." Architect Tate, Snyder, Kimsey (TSK) of Henderson will complete a site plan for the new land and work with CO Architects of Los Angeles, a specialty firm specializing in health education, to design the planned 100,000 to 150,000-square-foot medical education building. When classes for the UNLV School of Medicine tentatively begin next July, medical students will temporarily occupy newly renovated space at the UNLV Dental School on the Shadow Lane Campus. The 20,000-squre-foot space consists of classrooms and labs, study spaces and a health sciences library. Its location in the Las Vegas Medical District – and just down the street from the future building – will encourage immediate collaboration with UNLV and provide a seamless transition when the new building is constructed. “This partnership will bring the most advanced form of medical training to Southern Nevada while serving the needs of a diverse population, further ensuring our community is home to the best and brightest physicians,” said County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly, who chairs the UMC Board of Trustees and represents the area where the medical school will be located. “As our community grows, the UNLV School of Medicine is needed now more than ever.”The UNLV School of Medicine was formally established in August 2014 when the Nevada System of Higher Education’s Board of Regents approved and submitted a budget for legislative approval. Legislative funding was approved in June 2015, and since then the school has added faculty and staff, forged ahead on community and clinical partnerships, and secured full scholarships for the entire entering class in 2017. “UMC’s new partnership with UNLV further elevates the premier level of care we provide in Nevada, expanding opportunities for the next generation of physicians who now have the opportunity to learn at the elbow of our world-renowned physicians and clinicians at UMC,” said UMC CEO Mason VanHouweling. Dr. Barbara Atkinson, founding dean of the UNLV School of Medicine, said, "The partnership with the County and UMC will further our mission to build a premier medical school and academic health center that serves the residents of Southern Nevada.” Our students and residents will be in the heart of the Las Vegas Medical District working alongside UMC physicians to improve access to high-quality care.”###Clark County is a dynamic and innovative organization dedicated to providing top-quality service with integrity, respect and accountability.
