¡Ì HISTORIC GAME: The Bears will be the first in-state school to play a regular-season game

against the Razorbacks in 70 years. UCA last played the Razorbacks in 1947. Arkansas last played

a regular-season basketball game with an in-state school in 1950, against Arkansas Tech (UA

won 50-45).

The first meeting between the programs was in 1924, which was UCA¡¯s fourth season of playing

basketball and Arkansas¡¯ first season.

Arkansas has had a long-standing policy of not playing in-state schools in any sport, dating

back to the 1950s. But under current athletic director Hunter Yurachek, that policy was relaxed a

year ago to allow the Razorbacks to play other schools within the Arkansas system (Little Rock,

UA-Pine Bluff). This year that changed to allow Arkansas programs to play all other in-state

institutions, setting the stage for the first UCA-UA men¡¯s basketball game since 1947.

The UCA-UA men¡¯s game will be played on Dec. 12 at Bud Walton Arena, followed by the

UCA-UA women on Dec. 13. The Bears are the only in-state school on UA¡¯s schedule this season.

¡Ì LAST GAME: The Saint Louis Billikens shot 48.5 percent from the field and forced UCA into 27

turnovers in downing the UCA Bears 88-65 on Tuesday night at the Chaifetz Center in St. Louis.

UCA had four players in double figures, led by senior guard Rylan Bergersen with 16 points

and senior forward Jared Chatham with a season-high 13. The Bears shot a respectable 44.2

percent from the field and 43.8 percent (7 of 16) from three-point range, and outrebounded the

Billikens 36-35, including 12 offensive rebounds.

COACHES:

UCA - Anthony Boone is 9-16 as UCA¡¯s head coach. His overall

record is the same.

UA- Eric Musselman is in his second season at Arkansas and has

a 25-12 record. His overall record is 135-46 in his sixth season.

SLU scored 30 points off UCA¡¯s turnovers and recorded 16 steals

and scored 52 points in the paint. The Billikens also had four players in

double figures, led by Gibson Jimerson with 21 and Jordan Goodwin

with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

¡Ì GOVERNOR¡¯S I-40 SHOWDOWN: The Bears and Little Rock Trojans

played on Dec. 6 as part of the annual ¡°Governor¡¯s I-40 Showdown¡±,

sponsored by Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield. The series is a battle

between the universities located just 25 miles apart along Interstate

40. Points are awarded for head-to-head victories in all of the sports

that both teams sponsor, with a traveling trophy awarded to year-end

winner. UCA won the inaugural showdown in 2018-19 with 26.5 of the 43

possible points, while there was no winner last year after spring sports

were canceled by the NCAA.

After the loss, UCA leads this year¡¯s I-40 competition 14-5.

¡Ì DIVERSITY: The UCA basketball roster for 2020-21 is one of the most

diverse in the nation, featuring players from all over the United States

and from around the world.

UCA has players from nine different states and three foreign countries.

UCA players come from Arkansas, Texas, California, Idaho, Virginia,

Maryland, New York, Arizona and Tennessee. The other countries

represented are Nigeria (Samson George), France (Eddy Kayouloud) and

Canada (Khaleem Bennett). Junior center SK Shittu played high school

basketball in Arkansas but is actually from Nigeria as well.

Last year, UCA graduated a player (Aaron Weidenaar) from Montana.

2020-21 UCA BEARS BASKETBALL ? PAGE 2

The year before, the Bears had players from Kansas and Missouri, and had two more from Canada in 2017-18.

¡Ì TOUGH SCHEDULE: The Bears were scheduled to open the 2020-21 season with eight consecutive road games in November-December. With covid-19 changing schedules

all over the country, UCA had its first four games either canceled (three in the Ole Miss Tournament) or postponed (Missouri State).

The current schedule has the Bears playing seven consecutive road games, beginning 10 days later with the game at Memphis on Dec. 4.

The other opponents in the challenging slate include Little Rock, Saint Louis, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Baylor.

UCA then opens Southland Conference play, again on the road, on Jan. 2 at McNeese in Lake Charles, La. The Bears¡¯ first two homes of the season are set for Jan. 6 vs.

New Orleans and Jan. 9 vs. Sam Houston State.

In all, the Bears are scheduled to play just eight home games this season, all Southland Conference matchups. The season will conclude with the SLC Tournament on

March 8-14 in Katy, Texas.

¡Ì THREE IN FIVE: The Bears are beginning their second run of three games in five days, this time against three SEC opponents. The Bears played Memphis, Little Rock and

Saint Louis from Dec. 4-8, and now will face Arkansas, Ole Miss and Mississippi State from Dec. 12-16. All of the games have been and will be on the road.

¡Ì PLAYING THE BEST: The UCA Bears have now played the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the nation since moving up to NCAA Division I in 2006-07. UCA lost 94-44 to the No. 1

Kansas Jayhawks on Nov. 19, 2009 at historic Allen Fieldhouse. The Bears then dropped a 105-54 decision to the No. 2 Duke Blue Devils on Nov. 12, 2019 at equally historic

Cameron Indoor Stadium.

UCA played four Top 25 teams (Duke, Baylor, Wichita State, Marquette) last season, with Baylor also at No. 1 in the country.

Since moving to Division I, UCA has played a Who¡¯s Who of college basketball. UCA has played at Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA, Butler, Indiana, Oregon, UNLV, Michigan,

Connecticut, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Arizona State, Iowa, Creighton, Memphis, New Mexico State, Pittsburgh, Arkansas, Baylor, Wisconsin and Mississippi State,

among others.

¡Ì RETURNEES: The Bears return five of their top six scorers from a year ago, including their top three. Rylan Bergersen (15.8), DeAndre Jones (12.9) and Eddy Kayouloud

(12.2) were No. 1-3 last season. Missing is center Hayden Koval (12.2 ppg,), the school record-holder for blocked shots who transferred to UNC-Greensboro and is starting

for the Spartans. Also back are No. 5 Jared Chatham (7.1) and No. 6 Jaxson Baker (7.1). The Bears lost center Hayden Koval (transferred to UNC-Greensboro), the school¡¯s

all-time leader in blocked shots.

The Bears return 123 starts on their roster, led by Bergersen with all 31 games, Baker with 26 and Kayouloud with 25. Jones has 71 career starts but missed eight games

with injury last year.

The only two newcomers this year are Pittsburgh graduate transfer Samson George (6-7, 220) and freshman center Churchill Bounds (6-11, 260). Samson, from Minna,

Nigeria, played three seasons at Pitt. He is married with a daughter. Bounds played at Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland, Md. Freshman center Jonas Munson will play this

season after redshirting last year, as will sophomore guard Khaleem Bennett, who sat out last year with injury after playing as a freshman.

¡Ì ASSISTED: Senior point guard DeAndre Jones is the career assist leader at UCA after his nine assist game vs. McNeese on Jan. 4, 2019. He now stands at 453 career assists,

passing former record holder Russ Pennell (1983-85), UCA¡¯s former head coach. Pennell had 341 assists in just two years at UCA (1982-84) after transferring from Arkansas.

Jones has played in 91 career games, giving him a career assist average of 5.0.

Jones closed out the 2019-20 season with a combined 72 assists in UCA¡¯s final nine games (@ Lamar, @ McNeese, vs. UNO, @ SHSU, @ SFA, vs. Nicholls, @ ACU, @ SLU,

vs. NWST), an average of 8.0 per game, including four games with double-figure assists (three with 11).

Jones, who missed eight games in the middle of the season with a injury, led the Southland Conference with a 5.9 assist average but did not qualify for the minimum

number of games played. He was also UCA¡¯s second-leading scorer at 12.9 points per game and made 35 three-pointers.Jones also had three double-doubles with points

and assists. He is also just 52 points away (948) from 1,000 for his career, which would make him the 20th player in school history to attain that mark.

¡Ì REBEL HOMECOMING: UCA head coach Anthony Boone will get to face his alma mater when the Bears take on the Ole Miss Rebels on Monday, Dec. 14 at The Pavilion

in Oxford, Miss.

Boone, from West Helena,, Ark., played for the Rebels from 1994-98. Despite undergoing four knee surgeries, Boone started 79 of 94 games at Ole Miss. Even with relatively

modest career averages of 7.2 points and 4.8 rebounds, his inspirational play was recognized by the retirement of his number (41) ¡ª only the second student-athlete to be

so honored by the school (quarterback Archie Manning was the first) and just the fourth in history to date. After his senior season, Boone was one of seven finalists for the

Chip Hilton Award, given annually by the Basketball Hall of Fame to a player who demonstrates character on and off the court. He is a member of the Ole Miss Hall of Fame

and twice was selected for the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.

Boone was a graduate assistant at his alma mater and an assistant coach at Murray State (2000-03), at Jackson State (2003-09) at Grand Canyon University (2009-13) and

with the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA (2014) before coming to UCA.

As a player for Ole Miss under head coach Rob Evans, Boone led the Rebels to back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in 60 years. He was a senior on the team

that lost in the 1998 NCAA Tournament to Valparaiso on a memorable last-second shot.

Boone holds a bachelor¡¯s degree in chemical engineering and a master¡¯s degree in mathematics, both from Ole Miss.

¡Ì ALL-SLC: Then-junior guard Ryan Bergersen was named to the All-Southland Conference third team a year ago following his first season with the Bears. The 6-foot-6,

205-pounder from Boise, Id. (transfer from BYU) averaged a team-high 15.8 points a game last year while making 43 three-pointers and averageing 4.5 rebounds per game.

He scored in double figures 28 times in 31 games while averaging a team-best 33.6 minutes per game, playing much of the season with a facemask after breaking his nose.

Bergersen was named first-team preseason All-SLC this season, along with senior guard DeAndre Jones, a second-team preseason selection.

Ironically, Bergersen and Jones are childhood friends, both attending Borah High School in Boise, Idaho and both playing at Link Year Prep before Jones came to UCA

and Bergersen went to Brigham Young before transferring to UCA prior to last season.

¡Ì SLC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sophomore G/F Eddy Kayouloud earned UCA¡¯s first SLC Player of the Week honor on Dec. 23 of last year, after averaging 22.5 points. 10.5

rebounds an 5.5 assists in the Bears¡¯ two victories over Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Against UIW, Kayouloud had a double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds, along with 6 assists. Kayouloud was 9 of 10 at the free-throw line as UCA beat UIW 88-82

in overtime on Wednesday. On Saturday against A&M-CC, Kayouloud had 18 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. For the week, Kayouloud had 44 points, 21 rebounds and

11 asssists and shot 48.3 percent from the field and 82.4 percent from the foul line. It was UCA¡¯s first SLC Player of the Week since Jordan Howard earned the last of his six

career awards in 2016-17 when he was the SLC Player of the Year.

¡Ì PRESEASON POLL: The Bears are picked seventh in the 2020-21 Southland Conference preseason poll despite not qualifying for the eight-team SLC Tournament last

year with a ninth-place finish. Stephen F. Austin was picked to win the title, followed by Abilene Christian, Sam Houston State, Nicholls and Lamar. A whopping five different

teams received first-place votes, led by SFA with 17.

¡Ì VS. THE POWER FIVE: UCA¡¯s 96-69 victory over Cal on Dec. 6, 2018 in Berkeley was the first for the Bears over a Power 5 program since moving to NCAA Division I in

2006-07. UCA almost had another one earlier in the season, ironically against another Pac-12 team, when it lost 106-101 in overtime at No. 20 UCLA on Nov. 15 at Pauley

Pavilion. The closest losses previously to Power 5 teams were an 87-84 loss to Rutgers (Big Ten) in 2015, a 79-72 loss at Mississippi State (SEC) in 2012 and a 76-73 loss at

Oklahoma (Big 12) in 2010.

¡Ì FARRIS CENTER PROTOCOLS: The Farris Center will have a different look in 2020-21 due to Covid-19 protocols. Attendance will be capped at 500 fans in the 5,000-seat

arena for both men¡¯s and women¡¯s games this season. There will be no floor seating and all fans must enter through the main front lobby on the Bruce Street side, with doors

opening one hour prior to tip. For doubleheader days, there will be a one-hour break between games to allow for sanitizing the court, benches and locker room areas. Fans

will not be required to exit and re-enter the Farris Center between games.

Head Coach

ANTHONY BOONE

Anthony Boone took

over as interim coach on

Dec. 14 prior to the Pepperdine game last season

(Dec. 14) and was handed

the reins full time at the

end of the season.

Boone came to Central

Arkansas with head coach

Russ Pennell in 2014-15

as associate head coach,

after assisting Pennell for

four years at Grand Canyon

University (2009-13) and

one year with the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA

before coming to UCA. Pennell was also an assistant coach at Ole Miss

during Boone¡¯s playing career with the Rebels (1994-98).

As a player for Ole Miss, under Coach Rob Evans, Boone led the Rebels

to back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in 60 years. He was a

senior on the team that lost in the 1998 NCAA Tournament to Valparaiso

on a memorable last-second shot.

Despite undergoing four knee surgeries, Boone started 79 of 94 games

at Ole Miss. Even with relatively modest career averages of 7.2 points and

4.8 rebounds, his inspirational play was recognized by the retirement of

his number (41) ¡ª only the second student-athlete to be so honored by

the school (quarterback Archie Manning, the father of NFL quarterbacks

Peyton an Eli Manning, was the first).

After his senior season, Boone was one of seven finalists for the Chip

Hilton Award, given annually by the Basketball Hall of Fame to a player

who demonstrates character on and off the court. He is a member of

the Ole Miss Hall of Fame and twice was selected for the Southeastern

Conference Academic Honor Roll.

Prior to Grand Canyon, Boone was a graduate assistant coach at Ole

Miss, then an assistant coach for three seasons at Murray State (2000-03)

and six seasons at Jackson State (2003-09). Boone has a bachelor¡¯s degree

in chemical engineering and a master¡¯s in mathematics, both from Ole

Miss. He was class salutatorian at Central High School in West Helena,

Ark., where he was an all-state athlete.

Boone and his wife, Jennifer, have two daughters, Rebecca and Lyndsey.

BEAR HISTORY...

RAGS TO RICHES - UCA¡¯s most famous athletic alumnus is SCOTTIE

PIPPEN of Chicago Bulls fame. Pippen may have one of the greatest ragsto-riches stories in the history of sports.

The youngest of 11 children, Pippen was only an average high school

player (6-1, 145) at tiny Class B Hamburg (Ark. ) High School in the southeast

corner of Arkansas. He was allowed to walk on as a manager at UCA as a

favor to his high school coach Donald Wayne, who had played for UCA

Coach Don Dyer.

He earned a scholarship as a player early in his freshman year when the

team lost several team members. He quickly grew to 6-7 by his sophomore

year and earned first-team NAIA All-America honors as a junior and senior,

averaging 24 points and 11 rebounds as a senior.

After two stunning pre-draft camps, he was taken as the No. 5 lottery

pick in the 1987 NBA Draft by the Seattle Supersonics, who turned around

and traded his rights to the Chicago Bulls.

The rest is history as Pippen, teaming with the immortal Michael Jordan,

won three consecutive NBA championships from 1991-93, and three more

from 1996-98. He was an NBA All-Star 11 times and was named one of the

NBA¡¯s 50 Greatest Players of all time in 1997.

He was a member of the original Dream Team which dominated the

1992 Summer Olympic Games and was also a member of the 1996 Olympic

gold medal squad. His UCA jersey was retired in 2010. He was also recently

inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

THE MOVE TO D-I - The University of Central Arkansas made the fouryear transition from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I, beginning in

2006-07.

The NCAA requires programs making the move up to Division I to go

through a four-year waiting period where no athletic teams are eligible

for postseason play. UCA men¡¯s basketball became eligible for postseason

competition on the conference and national levels beginning with the

2010-11 season.

The Bears were eligible to win the Southland Conference regular season

divisional title during the transition period but could not advance to the

SLC postseason tournament because of the automatic qualifier stipulation

that the tournament enjoys.

AFFILIATION - UCA, a former member of the Gulf South Conference

at the D-II level, became an official member of the Southland Conference

on July 1, 2006. UCA was the only conference university from a state other

than Texas or Louisiana until Oral Roberts joined the conference in 201213. ORU has since returned to the Summit League. The other 12 schools

in the SLC are spread throughout those two states, leaving UCA on the

extreme northern end of the league geographically.

UCA¡¯s closest conference trips are five hours to either Stephen F. Austin

in Nacogdoches, Texas, or to Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La.

IN THE PAST - The UCA Bears have a rich postseason history dating

back to their NAIA days.

The Bears played in back-to-back NAIA national championship games

in 1990-91 and 1991-92 against the same Oklahoma City University team.

OCU, featuring former Kentucky player Eric Manuel, got the best of the

Bears both times,

The first year was a 74-71 win for OCU; the second was an 82-73 overtime

win. Both games were played at Kansas City¡¯s Kemper Arena.

UCA made one national tournament appearance during its NCAA D-II

years. The Bears made the 2005 NCAA South Regional and advanced to

the second round before losing to Lynn University.
