Structured Vs Unstructured PLAY
Structured Play: When children are involved in detail-oriented and organized activity.
• Free-time often filled with organized sports- soccer or softball
• Playing board and card games where rules are put into place in order to govern the choices of the players and identify courses of acceptable action.
• Disallows personal creativity, self expression, and imagination
Unstructured Play: is less specific in its goals or objectives.
• Children engage in free play that avoids set rules or expectations.
• Heightens imagination
• Allows for maximum exploration
• Able to learn more about “self”
o what they are good at, dreams
• I.e. Playing “house”. A group of kids can contribute to the general idea without one child in complete control. In this type of play, there are often unexpected twists and turns that can keep the game going for a long period of time.
