PCM2000

Solution Description:

Integrating a Bogen PCM2000 Zone Paging system to an AVVID solution

The BOGEN PCM2000 Zone Paging System provides robust zone overhead paging for applications requiring 1 to 99 zones, and up 32 paging zone groups. Its multi-function modules ensure flexibility and future expansion, with minimum time and expense. One of the more interesting features of the PCM2000 is the ability to have two-way hands-free communications through the speaker using the optional PCMTBM module. In addition, zones can be individually selected to be talkback or one-way only. “Privacy Beep” can be enabled in talkback zones to prevent eavesdropping. This is one of the benefits of installing a 70-volt paging system over a 24-volt system.

Method of Integration

Connectivity to the PCM2000 is provided via a FXO or FXS port from a 2610 or WS-6624 Catalyst 6000 line card gateway. MGCP and H.323 were configured and tested on the 2610 gateway. MGCP and Skinny were configured and tested on the WS-6624-FXS Catalyst 6000 line card.

Note: All gateways that we tested were CISCO products, however, we encountered some problems with the media control. Careful consideration should be taken when deploying this solution. (See section 12 Considerations)

• 2610 Ethernet Modular Router with FXO/FXO module and Cisco IOS IP Software

BOGEN Overhead Paging Hardware Requirements

• PCMTIM (Telephone Interface Module) – can support PBX page port contact closure, PBX page port VOX circuit, loop start FXO, ground start FXO and loop start FXS. Only loop start FXO and FXS configurations were tested.

• PCMCPU (Central Processor Module)

The BOGEN PCM2000 unit supplies a 48V talk battery and loop current detection from pins 3 & 4 of the TEL LINE jack on the PCMTIM module to the loop start trunk in the telephone system. When the unit detects a loop resistance between TIP and RING, it activates. When the loop

Opens, the paging ends.

Configuring the BOGEN PCM2000

This section will describe the configuration for:

Loop Start Trunk Access - 3 zone – One-way paging - Single amplifier - 25/70VAC speakers.:

STEP 1 Assembling Modules PCMTIM to PCMCPU and to PCMZPM

• Plug the 6-pin power connector from the PCMCPU module to the PCMTIM module jack J2. Make sure that the locking ridge faces header wall. (Green wire to the top).

• Plug the 26-pin ribbon cable from the PCMCPU module to the PCMTIM module 26-pin connector (J1). Make sure to align the polarizing tab in slot. (Pin 1 red stripe to the top).

• Place the modules together and dress the connector cables away from the sheet metal so they will not get pinched.

• Push the two units together while aligning the locking tabs in PCMTIM module to the locking slots in PCMCPU module. Slide the two units until the faces of both units are even.

• Secure the two units together by tightening a screw into the screw clamp tab in the back of the unit.

• Follow the same steps to add the PCMZPM module.

• Note: Do NOT connect PCMPS (power supply) at this point.

STEP 2 Connecting Loop Start Trunk from the Telephone System to the PCMTIM Module.

• Take the loop start trunk pair from the telephone system and wire it to the RJ11 TEL-LINE jack in the PCMTIM module to pins 3 and 4 (red and green).

• Use a 4 or 6 pin modular cord to connect the RJ11 to the TEL-LINE input on the PCMTIM module.

STEP 3 Switch Settings

• Set the TEL-INT-SEL DIP switches on the PCMTIM module for Loop Start Trunk configuration: switches 3,4 & 5 ON (to the right) and switches 1, 2, 6 & 7 OFF (to the left).

• Set the SYS-ID Dip switches on the PCMCPU module to the OFF position (to the left).

• Set the RUN-PROGRAM switch on the PCMCPU module to the RUN mode (up).

• Set the Talkback DIP switches on the PCMZPM module to the OFF position (to the left).

• Set the OUTPUT switch on the PCMZPM module to the HI-PWR position (down).

STEP 4 Testing your System.

• Connect power supply PCMPS to the PCMCPU module to either power jack 12VDC input or wire it to the 12VDC screw terminals observing polarity.

• Power LED’s should be lit.

• Access the Loop Start Trunk from the phone system and verify access tones (double beep).

• At this point, the system is functioning properly.

• Disconnect Power Supply.

STEP 5 Connecting the paging amplifier.

• Locate the terminals on the PCMCPU module labeled PA IN/RT (screws 1 & 2 from top) and wire to the TIP and Ring (T & R) input on the Bogen paging amplifier either TPU series, GS series or CLASSIC series.

• Locate the terminals on the PCMCPU module labeled PA OUT/RT (screws 5 & 6 from top) and wire to the COMMON and either 25 or 70V output on the paging amplifier.

STEP 6 Connecting 70VAC speakers.

• Locate the terminals on the PCMZPM module labeled ZONE A. These terminals have two connections marked + and - (screws 3 & 4 from top). Wire your 70V speakers for ZONE ONE to these terminals. Observe polarity (-) to common (+) to selected tap setting.

• Follow the same procedure for the terminals labeled ZONE B (screws 5 & 6 from top) for ZONE TWO, and the terminals labeled ZONE C (screws 7 & 8 from top) for ZONE THREE.

STEP 7 Testing your System.

• Connect the power supply PCMPS to the PCMCPU module to either the power jack 12VDC input or wire it to the 12VDC screw terminals observing polarity.

• Connect Bogen amplifier to the AC power outlet 120VAbC 60Hz.

• Set the volume on your Bogen amplifier to a 1/2 turn.

• Access the Loop Start Trunk from the telephone system and listen (on the hand set) for the confirmation tone (double beep).

• Dial 01 to access zone one and listen (on the hand set and also to the speakers) for a preannounce tone (single beep) follow by your page (audio)

• Follow the same steps for zones two (02) and three (03).

• Set the Bogen amplifier to the desired volume level.

1 Configuring the BOGEN PCM2000

This section will describe the configuration for:

STEP 2 Connecting the Station Level/Centrex from the Telephone System to the PCMTIM Module.

• Take the Station Level/Centrex pair from the telephone system and wire it to the RJ11 TEL-LINE jack in the PCMTIM module to pins 3 and 4 (red and green).

• Use a 4 or 6 pin modular cord to connect the RJ11 to the TEL-LINE input on the PCMTIM module.

STEP 3 Switch Settings

• Set the T EL-INT-SEL DIP switches on the PCMTIM module for Station Level/Centrex configuration: switch 6 ON (to the right) and switches 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 7 OFF (to the left).

• Set the SYS-ID Dip switches on the PCMCPU module to the OFF position (to the left).

• Set the RUN-PROGRAM switch on the PCMCPU module to the RUN mode (up).

• Set the Talkback DIP switches on the PCMZPM module to the OFF position (to the left).

• Set the OUTPUT switch on the PCMZPM module to the HI-PWR position (down).

STEP 4 Testing your System.

• Connect power supply PCMPS to the PCMCPU module to either power jack 12VDC input or wire it to the 12VDC screw terminals observing polarity.

• At this point all the power LED’s should be lit.

• Access the Loop Start Trunk from the phone system and verify access tones (double beep).

• At this point, the system is functioning properly.

• Disconnect Power Supply.

STEP 5 Connecting the paging amplifier.

• Locate the terminals on the PCMCPU module labeled PA IN/RT (screws 1 & 2 from top) and wire to the TIP and Ring (T & R) input on the Bogen paging amplifier either TPU series, GS series or CLASSIC series.

• Locate the terminals on the PCMCPU module labeled PA OUT/RT (screws 5 & 6 from top) and wire to the COMMON and either 25 or 70V output on the paging amplifier.

STEP 6 Connecting 70VAC speakers.

• Locate the terminals on the PCMZPM module labeled ZONE A. These terminals have two connections marked + and - (screws 3 & 4 from top). Wire your 25/70V speakers for ZONE ONE to these terminals. Observe polarity (-) to common (+) to selected tap setting.

• Follow the same procedure for the terminals labeled ZONE B (screws 5 & 6 from top) for ZONE TWO, and the terminals labeled ZONE C (screws 7 & 8 from top) for ZONE THREE.

STEP 7 Testing your System.

• Connect the power supply PCMPS to the PCMCPU module to either the power jack 12VDC input or wire it to the 12VDC screw terminals observing polarity.

• Connect Bogen amplifier to the AC power outlet 120VAC 60Hz.

• Set the volume on your Bogen amplifier to a 1/2 turn.

• Access the Station Level/Centrex port from the telephone system and listen (on the hand set) for the confirmation tone (double beep).

• Dial 01 to access zone one and listen (on the hand set and also to the speakers) for a preannounce tone (single beep) follow by your page (audio).

• Follow the same steps for zones two (02) and three (03).

• Set the Bogen amplifier to the desired volume level.

Configuring Cisco CallManager

1 WS-6624-FXS

When using the WS-6624-FXS the Bogen Paging System should be configured using the Station Level/Centrex Access configuration example see Section 7.1 Configuring PCM2000 Station level Access. The WS-6624-FXS will be configured on the Call Manager platform as follows:

• Select Add a New Device from the Device menu.

• Select the Device Type (gateway) and click the Next button.

• On the Add a New Gateway screen select Cisco Catalyst 6000 24 port FXS Gateway and click the Next button.

• The Gateway Configuration screen will than be displayed.

• Fill in the required information and Insert and Close button. The following screen will be display.

• Once the gateway is inserted clicking on the Add a New Port URL will allow port configuration.

• Select the port type and location and click the Insert and Close button

• Once the port is added configure the number of the paging system by clicking on the Add DN URL.

• The following screen will pop up. Enter all the required information and click on the Insert and Close button.

• Once the port is fully configured and the Paging System is installed connect the WS-6624-FXS port to the Paging System PCMTIM Tel Line port.

When the DN is dialed a confirmation beep should be heard in the handset. After the beep, dial the zone number and audio should be heard through the speakers.

NOTE: this configuration only works when the paging system is set up as a one-way paging system. When the system was configured as a two-way paging system the call would not terminate properly and re-order could be heard through the paging system until some timeout event occurred; approximately 25 seconds.

2 MGCP Gateway (FXS)

When using the 2600 router as a MGCP-FXS gateway the Bogen Paging System should be configured using the Station Level/Centrex Access configuration example in Section 7.1 Configuring PCM2000 Station Level. The WS-6624-FXS will be configured on the Call Manager platform as follows:

• Select Add a New Device from the Device menu.

• Select the Device Type (gateway) and click the Next button.

• On the Add a New Gateway screen select Cisco26XX and click the next button.

• The MGCP Configuration screen will than be displayed.

• Enter the fully qualified domain name in the MGCP Domain Name field and the type of voice interface module in the Installed Voice Interface Card field and click the Insert button. The following screen will be display.

• Select the VIC sub units in slot0 and slot1 and click the Update button.

• To configure the FXS port click on one of the FXS port URLs and the following page will be displayed.

• Select POTS from the drop down menu to go to the MGCP Member Configuration page.

• Select the device pool and click update. All other fields can be left at default values.

• Click on Ad DN next to the pots sub-unit, enter the necessary information and click the Update and Close button.

• Once the port is fully configured and the Paging System is installed connect the MGCP Gateway port to the Paging System PCMTIM Tel Line port.

When the DN is dialed a confirmation beep should be heard in the handset. After the beep, dial the zone number and audio should be heard through the speakers.

NOTE: this configuration only works when the paging system is set up as a one-way paging system. When the system was configured as a two-way paging system the call would not terminate properly and re-order could be heard through the paging system until some timeout event occurred; approximately 25 seconds.

MGCP Gateway (FXO)

This configuration is currently not supported. When setup the paging system sends re-order the Call Manager upon connection.

H.323 Gateway (FXO/FXS)

When using the 2600 router as H.323 gateway the Bogen Paging System should be configured using the Station Level/Centrex Access (if using FXS) or Loop Start Trunk (if using FXO) configuration example in the Section 7 Configuring PCM2000 Loop Start. The H.323 Gateway will be configured on the CallManager platform as follows:

• Select Add a New Device from the Device menu.

• Select the Device Type (gateway) and click the Next button.

• On the Add a New Gateway screen select H.323 Gateway and click the Next button.

• The Gateway Configuration screen will than be displayed.

• Enter the Device Name or IP address, select the Device Pool and click Insert.

• Add a route pattern for the paging system using the above gateway.
