2:00PM PUC Update – OPUC Staff (swapped time with Myth Busters)

3:00PM Wrap Up & Raffle

• Jerry D. spoke with OPUC staff member about an update during the Spring Training Event. He preferred the 2:00 timeslot so Jerry swapped times between Myth Busters and OPUC Update.

• Briefly review latest communication to/from Dave Marne regarding the Spring Training Event agenda and specifically the Myth Busters section;

- Cedar Poles are better & stronger than Douglas Fir (Jerry’s example).

- Attending the Spring Training and knowing the NESC backwards and forwards makes you a qualified worker (Colin’s suggestion)

- NESC infractions do not exist in areas >50 miles from a golf course (Colin’s suggestion)  ϑ

- If a violation has been in place >5 years, it can be grandfathered (Colin’s suggestion)

Here are some more “Myth Busters.”

• California’s GO95 requires more clearance than the NESC.

• Over lashing a communication cable does not require a NESC review.(Steve & Colin like)

• Going to the Dentist is more fun than working with the NESC.

• Oregon is the only State that cares about the NESC.

• For joint-use clearance, 40 inches is the only number I need to know.

• Every communication lineman is a qualified electrical worker. (Steve & Colin like)

• Two power linemen are required for some types of work.

• Designing and building to the NESC helps a person sleep good at night.

Let me know which ones that you like. The only one that I am concerned about is the sag and tension item that you suggested. This could take a while and might require running the SouthWire and CommScope sag and tension programs. If someone on the board already has “stock” sag and tension charts available for show and tell for the wire sizes that you proposed, this would streamline addressing this myth. Please let me know.

• Check-in on Jeopardy categories – any weak areas? (Note: Complete = Questions & Photos)

(Jeff wants to work on all categories.)

- Mid Span Issues: Vertical & Horizontal – Dawna

- Violations at pole: Steve – Partial Complete (photos to be delivered 2/7)

- Building Verticals: Ian – Partial Complete? (do we need photos?)

- Service Ends: Tom –

- Grounding / Guying (added): Jerry – Complete

- Other: – (did Jeff provide photos & questions?)

• Reminders:

- Colin requested if possible to deliver photos and questions to him via USB or CD rather than email due to size and issues last year with strain on his email account. Steve & Jerry brought USB with their items for Colin.

- 1-2 photos to go with each question (could also be a distant & close-up photo).

- 3 wrong answers, 1 right answer, and the rule & page # in NESC Code Book.

- Five sets of questions for each category.

• Status - Colin is working on software to figure out how to display names along with the # of the persons/clicker.

• Status - Colin is working on figuring out how to make clickers identify tables more easily so the game will move smoother, in progress.

• Awards – Stuart will be making trophies again for Jeopardy. Do we need to have other prizes?

- Utilize some old OJUA Swag for Jeopardy?

- Call for Swag from other companies as well?

• Main Attendee Giveaway – No T-shirt this year.

- Dawna suggested something new like water bottle

- Colin suggested a soft-side lunch box

- Steve suggested safety sunglasses

- Tom suggested hat

• Cost comparisons - Staff update on pricing for each (will want OJUA logo and/or Website shown on whatever committee chooses so we are also marketing OJUA).

• Committee decision?

• Review progress on meeting the Spring Training Timeline:
