Setting Up Your Scanner

If you haven't done so already, use the Personal Color Scanner Drivers CD to install the Windows 98 drivers and Presto! PageManager software.

Note: If you don’t have the Drivers CD, but are using a downloaded patch from the Web site, just double-click the file name PAVSCAN3.EXE and follow the on-screen instructions.

Place the Personal Color Scanner Drivers CD in the CD-ROM drive.

Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop.

Double-click the CD-ROM drive icon.

Double-click the SETUP.EXE file.

Follow the on-screen prompts.

Note: Be sure to disconnect and reconnect the scanner when you are prompted to do so. The scanner cable plugs into either of the USB ports on the back of the computer.

After installation is complete, you may be asked to insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM.

Attaching the Scanner to the Keyboard

The Personal Color Scanner can stand on its own base, or you can attach the scanner to your keyboard.

To attach the scanner to the keyboard:

Turn the keyboard upside down, and locate the two clips that elevate the back of the keyboard.

Turn the clips out so that the keyboard will be elevated.

Return the keyboard to its upright position.

Place the scanner under the back of the keyboard and adjust it so the two rectangular bumps on the keyboard fit into the corresponding indentations on the base of the scanner. The keyboard does not lock into the scanner; the keyboard rests on top of the scanner.

Because the scanner is behind the keyboard now, you don't want pages to feed straight through to the back of the scanner. To have pages exit the top of the scanner, open the flap at the top back of the scanner.

Calibrating the Scanner

Calibration tunes your scanner to give you clear, crisp scanned images. You will be prompted to calibrate your scanner the first time you use it, and you may want to recalibrate in the future, for example, if brightness varies across a scanned photograph.

Calibrating the First Time

Locate the calibration sheet that came with your Fun with Photos guide. (You can also use a blank, white sheet of paper.)

Feed the calibration sheet into the scanner slot. (The solid white side of the sheet should be facing up.) The scanner will grab onto the sheet and pull a bit of it into the slot.

Press the button on the scanner.

Note: Do not use a calibration card for another scanner. Different scanners are calibrated with different images.

Pressing the scanner button automatically starts the Imaging program; this is an application that comes with Windows 98. The scanner then pulls the calibration sheet through. When calibration is finished, the scanner is ready to use.

Recalibrating the Scanner

If you find that your scanned images are not as clear as they used to be, you should recalibrate the scanner.

Feed the calibration sheet into the scanner slot. Make sure the solid white side of the sheet is facing up.

Press the button on the scanner.

In the Scanner dialog box that appears, click the Advanced button.

Click the Calibrate button.

The calibration sheet is then pulled through the scanner.

Scanning an Image

There are a couple of ways to scan an image using the Personal Color Scanner. You can use either the scanner button or the Acquire command in programs, such as Presto! PageManager, that support TWAIN imaging.

Using the Scanner Button

Pressing the scanner button launches the Imaging application that is bundled with Windows 98.

Insert a page face up into the scanner slot.

Press the button on the scanner.

Note: The Imaging application automatically starts and the Scanner dialog box appears.

In the Scanner dialog box, choose the type of document you are scanning: Color Photo, Black and White Photo, or Black Line Drawing.

To adjust the resolution and brightness of the scanned image, click the Advanced button.

To begin scanning, click Scan Now. The scanner pulls the page through, and when the scan is complete, the scanned image appears in the Imaging window.

To save the image, click File on the menu bar, choose Save, and enter a file name. By default, the image will be saved in the TIF format.

Using the Acquire Command

Presto! PageManager, as well as many other graphics and imaging applications, offers an Acquire command that allows you to scan an image directly into the application.

Insert a page face up into the scanner slot.

Start Presto! PageManager (or other imaging application).

Choose File on the menu bar, and then choose Select Source.

Make sure the HP Pavilion Personal Color Scanner is highlighted and choose Select.

Note: If you have only one source listed, you do not need to select the source each time you scan an image. (In other words, you can skip steps 3 and 4 in the future.)

Choose File on the menu bar, and then choose Acquire.

In the Scanner dialog box, choose the type of document you are scanning: Color Photo, Black and White Photo, or Black Line Drawing.

To adjust the resolution and brightness of the scanned image, click the Advanced button.

To begin scanning, click Scan Now. The scanner pulls the page through, and Presto! PageManager saves the scanned image.

For more information about Presto! PageManager, refer to the Fun with Photos guide that came with your scanner.

Configuring the Scanner Button

You can configure the scanner button to start any application that is capable of being linked to the scanner button. The Imaging application that comes with Windows 98 is one such program. If you don't own any other software that has this capability, your scanner button is automatically configured to start Imaging when it is pressed. If you do own other software that supports the scanner button, a Scanner Events dialog box appears asking you to choose which application should receive the image.

If you would like the scanner button to always start a particular application (instead of giving you the chance to select an application), you can configure the scanner button using the Scanners and Cameras applet in Control Panel.

Click the Start button on the taskbar.

Choose Settings.

Choose Control Panel.

Double-click the Scanners and Cameras icon.

Make sure HP Pavilion Pers. Color Scanner is selected.

Choose the Properties button.

Click the Events tab.

Uncheck the boxes next to all applications, except for the one you want to assign to the scanner button.

Choose OK or Apply.

Scanner Troubleshooting

I plugged in my scanner, and the Update Device Driver Wizard window appeared.

You didn't install the software drivers for the scanner. Do so now by following these steps:

In the Update Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Next.

Place the Scanner Drivers CD in the CD-ROM drive.

Click Browse.

Click the CD-ROM drive. The computer will recognize the scanner, and display a message letting you know it found the updated driver for the scanner.

Click Finish.

My scanner won't work.

7. Make sure the scanner is plugged into one of the USB ports on the back of your computer.

8. Perhaps the scanner button is disabled, or no applications are assigned to the button. To check the status of your scanner button:

Click the Start button on the taskbar.

Choose Settings.

Choose Control Panel.

Double-click the Scanners and Cameras icon.

Make sure HP Pavilion Pers. Color Scanner is selected.

Choose the Properties button.

Click the Events tab.

Make sure at least one application in the list is checked.

Make sure the Disable device events box is NOT checked.

Choose OK or Apply.

9. If you have tried these suggestions and your scanner still doesn't work, call the HP Customer Care Center. Please have your support ID number ready. To find your support ID number, press Alt+Ctrl+S or look for the sticker on the back or side of your computer. To reach the HP Customer Care Center, call 208-323-4663.
