April 2015

Notes From Paula's Pad Welcome Spring! Being from the north, my first spring in Houston has been interesting because the entire winter has felt like a typical Pennsylvania spring. With that being said, it has been delightful to be in Houston and I have enjoyed the seasons so far and I cannot believe we are in April already! We have so much to look forward to this month and I want to share some special highlights with you. The 2015 Texas Alzheimer's Advocacy Day will take place on April 2 at the Texas State Capitol in Austin. This will be an opportunity to engage with fellow advocates, promote awareness, and educate your state legislator's office on how Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia affects their constituents. We are

pleased to support our Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter in transportation to Austin on April 2 to this very important event. Please pick up a card at the Concierge Desk for additional information regarding this trip. We plan to leave around 7 a.m. and may not return until 7 p.m.

Easter arrives on April 5, which is early, but residents will be busy in March finishing the Umbrellas in Art, making Easter cards and decorating "jeweled eggs." Plans are underway for an Easter egg hunt followed by a lovely luncheon with music from students at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music. Ladies are encouraged to wear their favorite Easter "bonnet." The end of the month, April 29, will feature a Spring Style Show facilitated by Nancy Wilfong, Fashion Consultant and Owner of "Get Organized."

As spring unfolds and barren tree branches fill with new buds and flowers blossom into folds of color everywhere, let us be reminded of hope and new beginnings.

BELMONT VILLAGE APRIL EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to Kelly Josey, PAL, the April Employee of the Month. Kelly was nominated by two residents and is well-respected by her coworkers and leadership team. She is smart and works tirelessly to meet the needs of our residents. Kelly is always helpful in bringing residents to activities and is our PAL "techie" if anyone needs help with AV equipment or televisions. Kelly is currently doing wonderful work as a PAL in the Belmont Village Neighborhood. Thanks for all you do, Kelly!

KUDOS TO KELLY!

Neighborhood

Spring is in the air! We have spring fever here at Belmont Village and the residents of the memory programs are celebrating the change in season with many spring-like activities. As everyone read about in our March newsletter, the residents have been enjoying our umbrella art activity during the month of March. The residents have been excited to express their creativity and artistic abilities by creating their own personalized umbrellas--be on the lookout to have these displayed throughout the community!

There has been a lot more than umbrella art going on in March though, The Circle of Friends has been celebrating Women's History Month. They have learned about women's roles in the Civil War and both World Wars in addition to learning about women's movements and famous women in history. To bring it all together, the Circle of Friends visited Rice University for an exhibit titled "Our Present/Their Future;" the exhibit features the portraits and stories of 13 prominent and influential Rice University women, including former trustees, faculty and staff. This provoked an interesting discussion for the

Circle group, as the outings always tend to do.

The Neighborhood has had an eventful March, too. They have had many Irish themed days in which they have been learning Irish Trivia, Irish Humor and doing Irish crafts. The Neighborhood has also been enjoying their weekly scenic drives on Saturdays; they recently went to Bear Creek Pioneer's Park to enjoy the sunny day and see the animals. They had done this previously and had such a good time that they decided to go again and, of course, they always make their McDonald's run prior to the drive so that the residents can keep fueled with their favorite beverages.

The Belmont Village Memory Program Staff wishes all of the residents and families a happy Easter and a wonderful spring! We're excited to have such a great group of staff and residents, and we look forward to enjoying the warm weather and fun activities that April has in store.

Skype at Belmont Village

A resident's daughter made a unique request that set wheels in motion for our amazing IT department. With the help of Mary Spatz and Jeff Hill, Marvin B. was able to see his granddaughter's wedding in Florida. He was the only one who couldn't travel, so we made arrangements for him to be able to Skype with her to watch and listen to the wedding. Jeff from My Gait came over on Saturday to make sure he was connected properly and he was able to view and listen to the wedding.

Health

A urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria or germs from one place enter the urinary tract and cause an infection.

The urinary tract consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. The most common site of infection is in the lower urinary tract, the bladder and urethra. The bladder stores urine until it is flushed out of the body through the urethra. If the bacteria aren't flushed out with the urine, an infection can develop and possibly spread up into the kidney.

UTIS are more common in women than in men. As we get older the nerve endings in our bladders lose their function and we may not feel any symptoms of an infection until we are very ill.

Symptoms to watch for are: burning during urination, frequency and sometimes a mild fever. These indicate a lower tract infection (bladder).

Symptoms of an upper urinary tract infection (kidney), come on quickly and may include high fever with chills, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, back pain, and sometimes confusion or delirium.

CARE: ? See a doctor as soon as

possible ? Take and finish any

prescribed medicine as soon as prescribed. ? Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, clear sodas and cranberry juice. When to Call the Doctor: ? Fever or burning sensation that doesn't go away or symptoms worsen. ? If you begin to experience confusion or delirium. ? Back pain, high fever, vomiting or chills develop. ? Abdominal pain develops or gets worse.

Asleep Yet Active

While you're asleep, your brain is busy. Medical experts say even at rest, crucial cognitive functions are taking place, and neurons in the brain stay active. Amazingly, as you slumber, the brain performs several vital functions: it processes information, forms new memories, makes creative connections, cleans out toxins, and stores information about physical tasks.
