The altered M1841 rifle was bored out to .58 caliber, provided with an adjustable sight, a new ramrod and was fitted with a lug to accept a saber bayonet, which also required the rifle to have a shortened front band. Beginning in 1855 and continuing through 1857, the Harpers Ferry Arsenal converted the M1841 rifles to the updated model. ................
