Georgia to Host 2003 US Interscholastic Orienteering Championships

THE GAOC ANNOUNCES ITS 2003 NATIONAL ORIENTEERING EVENT

ATLANTA, GA, June 15, 2002 -- The Georgia Orienteering Club (GAOC) has announced that it will host the US Interscholastic Championships in conjunction with its national orienteering event, the Georgia Navigator Cup. This event will take place January 18-19, 2003, at Sweetwater Creek State Park, west of Atlanta, GA. GAOC’s Laurie Searle will serve as the meet director.

The Interscholastic competition is open to full-time students in grades 9-12 who are directly affiliated with a school, 19 years or younger as of December 31, 2001, and members of the US Orienteering Federation.

The Interscholastic Championships offers individual and team competitions in the Varsity, Junior Varsity and Middle School categories. Medals will be awarded to the top three places in each category, with The Brunton Cup traveling trophies going to the first place teams.

Registration opens on September 15, 2002, and is limited to the first 400 entrants. Details, including event information, registration forms, and rules are on the Georgia Orienteering website at , under special events.

The Georgia Navigator Cup event, open to ages 10 on up, takes place simultaneously at the same location but on different courses. This event is open to 200 competitors and those who are members of the US Orienteering Federation receive national ranking.

Orienteering is a cross-country running sport, demanding physical and mental fitness. The sport emphasizes map reading and the ability to make quick decisions under physically challenging conditions.

The US Interscholastic Championships is a championship event sanctioned by the

US Orienteering Federation.
