Immigration:

Americanization – belief that assimilating immigrants into American society would make them more loyal citizens

Assimilation - the social process of absorbing one cultural group into harmony with another

Angel Island – immigrants processing station that opened in San Francisco Bay in 1910

Chinese Exclusion Act (1882) – law that prohibited the immigration of Chinese laborers

Ellis Island – island in New York Harbor that served as an immigration station for millions of immigrants arriving to the United States

“Gentlemen’s Agreement” – pact between the United States and Japan to end segregation of Asian children in San Francisco public schools; in return, Japan agreed to limit the immigration of its citizen to the United States

Ghetto - a poor densely populated city district occupied by a minority ethnic group linked together by economic hardship and social restrictions

Melting Pot – society in which people of different nationalities assimilate to form one culture

Salad Bowl – concept suggests that the integration of the many different cultures of United States residents combine like a salad

Nativism- belief that native-born white Americans are superior to newcomers

New immigrants – Southern and Eastern European immigrants who arrived in the United States in a great wave between 1880 and 1920

Old immigrants – Irish and German immigrants who arrived in the United States between 1820 and 1860

Pogrom – an organized persecution of ethnic group

Push Factors – factors that motivate people to leave their home countries

Pull Factors – factors that attract people to a new location

Quarantine – isolation to prevent the spread of infectious disease

Restrictive Covenants – An agreement between parties limiting or restricting the use of land owned by one of the parties
