Course Description: US History is designed to provide students with a comprehensive, intensive study of major events and themes in US history. During the year we will study the European exploration and colonization of North America, and the resulting establishment and growth of the United States through the beginning of the 21st century. Our intent is not just to study what events happened, but also why they happened and how they affected America.

Students will take the state-mandated Milestone/EOCT (end of course test) in May.

Grading Scale/Distribution:

A 90-100 B 89-80 C 79-74 D 73-70 F 69-below

▪ Tests/Essays/Projects/Quizzes: 80%

▪ Classwork/Homework: 20%

▪ End of Course Test/Semester Exam: 20%

Daily Work: Each day will begin with the essential question (EQ), I CAN statements aligned with State standard and learning Target. Daily lessons will include (but are not limited to): note taking, textbook readings, DBQs (Document Based Questions)/primary source work, group work/centers/stations, worksheets, current event topics, learning through use of technology, and group discussions. There will also be homework assignments depending. All work should be kept in the student’s notebook.

Notebook: A 2” (or larger) three-ring binder is the best choice for this course. Students should use it to keep all class notes, handouts, notes from class, study guides, and assignments. We will keep a notebook in class, numbering all important notes, activities, worksheets, etc. It is your responsibility to keep up with your notebook and all the appropriate contents. There will be notebook checks periodically throughout the semester. To be successful in the course you must demonstrate organization and discipline.

Unit Sheets: You will receive a unit sheet at the beginning of each unit (this will occur the day after a unit test) and will be all that they need to know for upcoming lessons. The unit sheet will highlight the standards that you are expected to master, important dates like homework due dates, quizzes, & the unit test date, and the vocabulary needed for that unit’s test. This way you have it ahead of time, can work on it at your leisure, and you know ahead of time what to expect throughout the unit & on the upcoming test.

Classwork/Quizzes: There will generally be a quiz every week or every two weeks. The quizzes will be included in your 80% assessment category in Infinite Campus, and will be half the weight of a unit test. We will always review for quizzes beforehand in class, so you know what to expect & what to review/study.

Technology

• There will be occurrences when students will be encouraged to use their technology (tablet, or school provided computer) in the classroom. This will be made very clear. If you have not been given permission, do not assume that you may use your technology at any time. Phones will be placed at the front of the room upon entrance (they will have ability to charge them when there) and only allowed during specific lessons. Please make sure student is aware of this.

• We will use the website for information on upcoming dates for tests, quizzes, and or due dates for projects. You will receive texts with reminders or extra information regarding our class.

o Send a text message to #81010 with the message @dcayson

• We will also use the websites and UsaTest prep. These are sites where you may take tests/quizzes, or assignments. You will receive information separately as to how to sign up.

o If you do not have access to a computer or internet at home, you will need to make arrangements ahead of time (BEFORE the due date) to make sure your assignments are completed. I will provide review time before the test where the students can work on assignments before tests.

Class Policy/Expectations:

• Bring your notebook, paper, and a writing utensil to class EVERYDAY.

• Be on time and ready to begin work immediately following entering class.

• Bathroom policy: Make it a habit to go to the bathroom between classes. No passes will be given out during the first or last 15 minutes of class.

• Food and drinks (other than water) are prohibited in class.

• Cell phones, ipods, or other devices (including games), must be placed at front of the room at beginning of class daily. Unless you have been given permission to use your device. They will be taken to the office with a referral for the student. Parents (not the student) will then have to pick them up at school.

• Clean up after yourself! I like to keep a clean classroom, so be sure to check your desk area for any trash that you may have accumulated during the period.

• Respect all teachers, classmates, and school property.

• Follow the Henry County handbook.

Consequences:

If at any time you are not doing the assigned activity or displaying appropriate behavior during class time, you will first be given a warning to redirect you attention and focus. From there, if the behavior and/or actions have continued, further disciplinary actions will be enacted. This includes, but is not limited to, seat changes, removal from class, parent contact, and disciplinary referrals.

Extras:

• Any cheating or plagiarism by a student will result in a zero!

• Work missed due to an excused absence can be made up, but it is the student’s responsibility to arrange with the teacher to do so upon return.
