Description of Data used by Ravn, Schmitt-Grohe’ and Uribe, “Deep Habits”, forthcoming, Review of Economic Studies.
The data are quarterly for the US economy. The sample period is 1960 quarter 1 – 2001 quarter 4 unless otherwise mentioned.
The data are organized as follows:
Row 1: Names of the data series
Column 1: The date in the following format year.quarter where “quarter” takes on the values 00 for quarter 1, 0.25 for quarter 2 etc.
Column 2: Real US private sector consumption constructed as private sector nominal consumption expenditure divided by the implicit price deflator for this series. Private sector nominal consumption expenditure and the implicit deflator were obtained from SourceOECD (data mnemonics ‘USA.CARSA.S1__Private final consumption expenditure’ and `USA.DNBSA.1996.S1__Private final consumption expenditure’). These data were seasonally adjusted from the source.
Column 3: The implicit consumption deflator (obtained from SourceOECD, data mnemonic ‘USA.DNBSA.1996.S1__Private final consumption expenditure’).
Column 4: Real US GDP constructed as Nominal GDP divided by the implicit GDP deflator. Both series were obtained from SourceOECD (data mnemonics `USA.CARSA.S1__gross domestic product’ and `USA.DNBSA.1996.S1__gross domestic product’, respectively). These data were seasonally adjusted from the source.
Column 5: The implicit GDP deflator (obtained from SourceOECD, data mnemonic ‘USA.DNBSA.1996.S1__gross domestic product’).
Column 6: Labor share of income constructed as compensation of employees divided by GDP at factor cost. Both series were obtained from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis section of Economagic. This data series was used only as an additional instrument when checking the sensitivity of the results. It starts in 1964 quarter 1.
Column 7: Nominal wage defined as hourly earnings in the private sector obtained from SourceOECD (main economic indicators).
Column 8: Price of non-fuel and non-energy goods defined as the CPI for non-food and non-energy. This series was obtained from SourceOECD (USA CPI NON FOOD NON ENERGY).
Column 9: 3 months T-Bill rate obtained from SourceOECD.
Column 10: 1 year Treasury constant maturity rate obtained from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis section of Economagic.
Column 11: The Federal Funds rate obtained from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis section of Economagic.
Column 12: US labor force obtained from obtained from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis section of Economagic.
