Age structure diagrams representing 1995 – 2050 are shown in the PowerPoint for United States, Mexico, and Japan. Each age group is represented by a colored bar on the graph. As you click through the PowerPoint, follow each colored line as it moves up the chart (as that particular group ages) and note the changes not only to each individual line, but the population as a whole. After studying all three countries, answer the following questions.
1. Check all that apply to each of the three countries (for 1995 only):
|(choose one or the other for each country) |United States |Mexico |Japan |
|Developed | | | |
|Underdeveloped | | | |
|(choose one of the four for each country) | | | |
|Steady Population (No Growth) | | | |
|Moderate Growth | | | |
|Rapid Growth | | | |
|Declining Population | | | |
2. Using only the graph for 1995, which country has the fastest rate of population growth? Explain specifically how you can tell. (After making your prediction and explaining it, toggle through each PowerPoint to see if you are correct).
3. Summarize each of the three countries age structure diagrams (from 1995) and explain important differences between them.
4. Explain how is it possible that your age group (light blue at the bottom in US 1995) actually increases in total number as the group “gets older” in the following years. (Hint: Observe the same effect in either of other countries to see how unusual the widening age groups are.)
5. Research the term “demographic transition” on the internet. Categorize the stage that each country is in for 1995 and 2050, and include at least one sentence to support each answer you give (i.e. you will have six total answers and six explanations).

To assist with the last two questions, research the following websites:
(for general factors that affect populations)
(for specific factors in each country)
6. Describe and explain two factors in each of the countries that affect changes seen in their population over the time period.
7. Describe and explain two technological advancements (one positive and one negative) that could affect change in human populations in general.
