March, 2006

FORWARD

Aviation Day 2006 is now history, we will have a little breather now until we need to start planning for 2007. At the February meeting Don Gaunt gave us an excellent talk on his experiences at pipeline patrol in both airplanes and helicopters. For March we will have a special mystery aviation celebrity. Believe me, you do not want to miss this one.

MINUTES: EAA CHAPTER 99 MEETING, February 14, 2006

The meeting was opened at 7:06 PM by Pres. Keith Gordon. After introducing the guests, he called for the reading of the minutes of the last meeting and the treasurer’s report. The minutes were read by the secretary and approved as read. The treasurer’s report was given by the treasurer who reported that the proceeds from the recent Aviation Day were $7,271.16 and that the expenses were not as yet accounted for but the total treasury would be approximately 11,700.00. The report was approved as given.

Pres. Keith then recognized the success of the recent Aviation Day and the efforts of all who participated under the leadership of Todd Scher. Todd then thanked those who helped and reported that the restaurant, C. J. Cannon’s, was so pleased with the extra business generated for them that they absorbed all the costs of the complimentary lunches for attending pilots. Sylvia reported that her survey for how attendees learned of the event indicated that 50% read about it in the local newspaper, 21% saw the temporary road signs and 11% saw the posters which were the three major forms of advertising. The rest was word of mouth from EAA members, pilots, etc. Marty Marugg reported on the assistance by the local CAP and suggested a donation to them. Michael David presented a motion which was seconded by Todd Scher and approved by the group to donate $400.00 to them. Todd Scher reported that the Collings Foundation had five flights of five passengers in their B-25 plus numerous ground tours and that they were pleased with their participation even though the B-17 was unable to attend due to an engine problem. Landis suggested that interested members attend the next planning meeting for an aftermath of the event.

Spencer Gould reported on the KitFox project and Marty Marugg reported on the flying club, both of which seem to have start up problems. Pres. Keith reported that the chapter hangar was again vacant. Ken Mishler offerred a proposal for his associates to use the hangar temporarily to house their demonstration aircraft. Michael David motioned to accept, Spencer Gould seconded and the motion passed.

President Keith then called for volunteers for the next Young Eagles Day as a high turnout is expected as a result of Aviation Day. He then reported that a Tampa historical society had requested information on Vero Beach Airport history. Todd Scher volunteered to supply it to them.

The meeting was closed at 8:00 PM and after refreshments, a program was presented by Chapter 99 member Don Gaunt in which he told of his experiences as a pipeline patrol pilot in airplanes and helicopters.

YOUNG EAGLES, PANCAKE BREAKFAST

& FLYOUT

February 25 started out with partly cloudy skies and a moderate breeze and slowly deteriorated from there. By mid-morning the overcast was solid with a lowering ceiling and increasing winds. However, before that Bill Ransom, Bill Zorc and Ken Mishler did manage to fly six youngsters. The breakfast was well attended with some visitors flying in from other chapters. Sylvia contributed a large bowl of strawberries to the usual pancakes and pastry served up by Gene and Vernon making for a delicious meal. By the time the flying was terminated and the breakfast cleaned up the weather discouraged anybody from any further flying so the intended fly out for lunch was postponed. Weather permitting, the fly out after the next Young Eagles scheduled for March 25, will be to River Ranch Resort. Any pilots wanting to attend are welcome. The expected departure time will be 11:00 AM.

AVIATION DAY February 11, 2006

Despite several anomalies, the event was successful. The biggest problem was the weather. The day was gorgeous, bright sunlight, no clouds but lots of wind. Close to 30 knots sustained with higher gusts. This of course kept a number of aircraft grounded, especially light sports that normally would have attended. Some of those that did arrive in the morning before the wind picked up left around noon. The Collings Foundation B-25 Bomber arrived late Friday afternoon, but the B-17 missed the event entirely and did not arrive until Sunday. It had an engine failure at Zephyr Hills which took several days to change.

On the plus side, there were still plenty of exhibits for the attending public to see. Out of Sebastian, Southeast Sport Aircraft had two Allegros and Velocity Aircraft brought two of their finest. Piper had two brand new Cherokees and the queen of the fleet, the original 1932 “Cub”. Sun Aviation provided two classics, a Republic SeaBee and an Ercoupe. Premiere Aircraft Sales had a Diamond Star and a Mooney. Liberty Aircraft of Melbourne brought a brand new XL-2. Our own Chapter 99 members provided over a dozen unique aircraft and some others were brought in by visiting pilots from other chapters. Several model clubs showed miniature cars and airplanes, model rockets and radio controlled model aircraft. There were also military displays, helicopters, a jet car, fire and rescue and some that I may have missed. In addition, rides were available in an antique Waco biplane, the B-25 bomber, an Extra 300 aerobatic airplane and a helicopter.

The event would not have been possible without the co-operation and contributions of the airport management and several airport tenants. C.J. Cannon’s restaurant provided a special lunch and drinks on their outside deck, Sun Jet Center and Corporate Air provided miscellaneous aircraft services, Flight Safety had an educational display and Civil Air Patrol, USAF Auxiliary provided security assistance. Many thanks from Chapter 99 to all the contributors, the attendees and the Collings Foundation.
