In December 2011, NCR released new touch controller firmware. During 2012, as the firmware began to be deployed in the field, calibration incidents began to increase in some customer sites. Engineering has determined that a bug was introduced into the touch firmware version 9.2. The symptom observed is touchscreen accuracy randomly changes for no apparent reason. Despite repeat calibrations, the problem can recur. It has been most frequently observed at customer sites utilizing metal counter tops.

RealPOS 50/70XRT/72XRT are assembled from a serialized base and a serialized touch head. The NCR Entitlement System only reflects the base serial number, not the touch head serial number. The touch head serial number can be found on the back of the touch head. Touchscreen heads with serial number 54-45032606 and above were built with firmware version 9.2 and subject to the above behavior. Please note 1591 display heads above serial number 54-45032606 were built with firmware 8.5 and not at risk. See Serial Number exception file below.

Engineering has released firmware version 9.6 to correct the issue. We suggest all customers make this change to 9.6 to ensure proper touchscreen calibration stability. Version 9.6 firmware can be flashed remotely by the customer/helpdesk with no onsite intervention. Please note that if the touchscreen accuracy was unacceptable prior to the firmware update, then a 9 point calibration may be warranted. RealPOS 50/70XRT/72XRT touch heads with 8.5 firmware and those already upgraded to version 9.5 are not subject to this issue and do not require action.

RealPOS 50/70XRT/72XRT Touch Firmware 9.6 Update Instructions

Restrictions:

1) The TouchFW9.6 .exe does not support running on Windows 2000 or older operating systems.

2) For XP Pro, WePOS, POSReady 2009, and XP Embedded (XPe), the TouchFR96.exe must be executed from an Administrator account (contact your help desk if you need assistance).

3) For Windows 7 or POSReady 7, the TouchFW9.6.exe must be executed from an Administrator account and with elevated privileges. Running with elevated privileges means right-clicking on TouchFW9.6.exe and choosing “Run as Administrator” or executing TouchFW9.6.exe from a Command Prompt that is launched by right-clicking on Command Prompt and choosing “Run as Administrator” (contact your help desk if you need assistance).

4) The TouchFW9.6 .exe requires that the Microchip Tsharc driver is installed, preferably version 6.45.

5) USB devices must not be hot-connected or hot-disconnected while the update is running.

6) The update process may reset USB devices other than the touch controller during the update, and a system reboot may be required to restore full operation of these devices. In extreme cases, if the update fails, an AC power cycle to completely reset the system and a retry of the update may be necessary.

Instructions:

1) Run on a supported system and from an Administrator account with the proper privileges (see Restriction 3 above).

2) Unzip the files in TouchFW9.6.zip to a temporary update location such as C:\1.0.0.18 or something similar. Do not unzip the contents to the \Program Files\Tsharc directory. This may overwrite existing files with the same names and interfere with the operation of existing tools.

3) Parameter File – TouchFW96.ini – Edit the TouchFW96.ini file (in notepad) prior to executing if default options are to be change.

Default install options:

[Version]

version=1.0.0.18

Date=February27, 2014

[RunMode]

Force=False ; True = Force flash 9.6 update even if current version is already 9.6

Quiet=False ; True = Does not require user to acknowledge messages. They will timeout and end on their own.

Factory = False ; True = skip platform validation

Rework = False ; True = use RW parameters instead of EP

DisableSystemSleep = False ; True = prevents windows from sleeping/hibernating

RAMLo30Mode = False ; True = RAM LO 30 is considered to determine rework state.

[UsbFilter]

Install_Filter_Driver=False ; True = Install 5965/5967 USB Hub filter driver if it is not currently installed

Sleep_Time_Millisec=10000 ; Number of milliseconds (decimal) to sleep before raising VBUS

4) Execute “TouchFW9.6.exe”. Do not hot-connect or hot-disconnect any USB devices while the update is running.

a. For user interactive mode, execute the file “TouchFW9.6.exe” directly.

b. For silent mode (no user interaction required), edit the TouchFW96.ini file (in notepad).

5) The update process will continue for 5 to 10 minutes.

6) When complete, verify the firmware version changed to 9.6 Custom 0 successfully by viewing the update logs located in the logs directory within the same folder as TouchFW9.6. The verification can be found at the bottom of the text file. The file name will be Touch_FW96_Updt_MMddyyyyhhmmss.log where:

a. MM = Month, dd = Day, yyyy = Year, hh = hour, mm = minute, ss = second
