Using a dict ionary

A dict ionary helps you f ind t he meaning of words.

The words are list ed in alphabetical order.

What is alphabet ical order?

? The words come in t he order t hey appear in t he alphabet .

For example:

Apples, baking, crumble, energy, fibre, microwave and veget arian. So, words beginning wit h A will appear bef ore words beginning wit h B.

Exercise 1 Put t hese words in alphabet ical order. Writ e t he answers in t he column called " correct order" .

Did you not ice t hat some of t he words began wit h t he same let t er? How do you put t hese words int o alphabet ical order? Look at t he pages in t he dict ionary below.

Now you must decide what let t er comes f irst in t he alphabet ; in t his case it

You have learned t hat t he dict ionary list s words in alphabet ical order. The dict ionary also t ells you t he meaning of a word. Some words have more t han one meaning.

Use t he dict ionary and f ind t he meaning of t he f ollowing words. Remember, t he words will be in t he dict ionary in alphabet ical order.

Use the meaning that fits the words as they are used in the text below.

As part of t he course, we have t o complet e an invest igat ion int o local hospit alit y. We should begin t his proj ect by having a plan of work t hat should include det ails of t he organisat ion chosen, reasons f or choosing it and any previous knowledge of t he est ablishment . The report should also include met hods of invest igat ion such as let t ers, quest ionnaires, menus, maps, phot ographs and reviews. When all t he evidence has been gat hered, a report should be writ t en. This should include an int roduct ion, an evaluat ion t hat should describe t he process, and a conclusion where you can describe any problems met , how you overcame t hem, what you have learned f rom t he process (such as skills f or work, conf idence building, et c).

Please ask your t ut or if you are unsure of using a dict ionary or would like some more exercises t o pract ise.
