Something – Happened – and – Then – Somebody –Wanted – …

Something – Happened – and – Then – Somebody –Wanted – But – So

This is a quick summarizer that requires a one/two sentence response. It is suitable for both nonfiction texts (Something-Happened-and-Then) and fiction texts (Somebody-Wanted-But-So).

PROCEDURE:

1. Provide the following set of prompts to students before reading…

o Nonfiction:

Something (independent variable)…

Happened (change in that independent variable)…

And (effect on the dependent variable)…

Then (conclusion).

o The goal is to use the template to write a one-two sentence summary of a longer piece.

o It is short and to the point, and it has a general overview that includes the topic, a significant point about the topic, and the conclusion.

o Fiction:

Somebody (characters)…

Wanted (plot motivation)

But (conflict)…

So (resolution).

o A good practice for this technique is to summarize a favorite passage, theme, or characteristic from readings.

VARIATIONS:

If you want a more elaborate summarization, ask students to use the sentences they created from the template as a topic sentence and provide three supportive details.
