She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walking frames and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, “The tooth fairy will never believe this!”^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^A photographer wanted to take some aerial shots of the countryside and so he booked a flight with the local aerodrome. On arrive, he was directed to the runway and told that the plane was waiting for him. Seeing a light aircraft with its engine running, he climbed in and told the pilot: ‘Let’s go.’Shortly after take-off, the photographer said : ‘Now, if you can come in low over that lake, I’ll be able to take some nice pictures.’‘Why do you want to do that? Asked the pilot.‘It’s my job, I’m a photographer.’‘Oh,’ said the pilot, ashen-faced. ‘So you’re not the flight instructor?’^^^^^^^^^^^^^^When a woman discovered that she was pregnant, her four year old son overheard his parents’ conversation. But he didn’t say anything until a week later when a family friend asked him if he was excited about the prospect for a new brother or sister.‘Yes,’ said the boy, ‘and I know what we’re going to name it. If it’s a girl, we’re going to call her Emily, and if it’s another boy we’re going to call it Quits.’THIS SUNDAY’S MASSScriptureIsaiah 49: 3, 5 – 6.Psalm 39.R/. Here I am, Lord, I come to do your will.I waited, I waited for the Lord/ and he stooped down to me;he heard my cry.He put a new song into my mouth, praise of our God.You do not ask for sacrifice and offerings, but an open ear.You do not ask for holocaust and victim.Instead, here am I.In the scroll of the book it stands writtenthat I should do your will.My God, I delight in your lawin the depth of my heart.Your justice I have proclaimedin the great assembly. My lips I have not sealed;GRATITUDEToday I stood at my window and cursed the pouring rain,Today a desperate farmer prayed for his fields of grain. My weekend plans are ruined, it almost makes me cryWhile the farmer lifts his arms and blesses the clouded sky.The alarm went off on Monday and I cursed my work routine,Next door a laid-off mechanic feels the empty pockets of his jeans.I can’t wait for my vacation, some time to take for me,He doesn’t know tonight how he’ll feed his family.I cursed my leaky roof and the grass I need to mow,A homeless man downtown checks for change in the telephone.I need a new car, mine is getting really old,He huddles in a doorway, seeking shelter from the cold. With blessings I’m surrounded, the rain, a job, a home,Though my eyes are often blinded by the things I think I own.you know it, O Lord.1 Corinthians 1: 1 – 3. Family, friends etc.-What is my influence like in the All Saints Parish?-How do I relate with the many people I encounter daily?-Do I see myself as a peaceful person?By definition, the word Peace is most often seen in the light of the absence of war or conflict amongst nations or societies. However, as Catholic Christians here in All Saints Parish, I will want our definition of what Peace is to be more person-based or centred than between Nations, which makes it a little distant. For instance, by giving it this we-feeling the question we throw to ourselves would be - how best do we all continue to co-exist and worship (together) with each other in a brotherly and sisterly manner? Are we striving enough to be each other’s keeper, to support each other, and empathize with each other? We always or sometimes shake hands, hug or kiss during the Sign of Peace during Mass. What that means to the individual is unknown, but for once, can we re-consider that practice at least for Sunday and let our holding of each other’s hand be more meaningful than it had ever been? Look intently at each other’s face and promise those beautiful words “Peace of Christ be with you”.Again the theme of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, this year calls upon all of us to make non-violence our style of living. He encourages us to make non-violence our way of life. Finally by working hard towards the realisation of peace in our homes, places of work and worship would go a long way to instil peaceful attitudes in all.Let us also continually pray to God, to always bless us with Peace and Joy, all the days of our lives here on earth.
