4898390-635000Step by Step Patient Injection GuideInsulin is injected using an insulin pen and an insulin pen needle.The insulin pen is composed of 3 components:The body of the pen, which includes a prefilled insulin cartridgeThe edge of the pen, dial to measure the insulin dosage, and injection buttonPen capThe pen-needle is covered with an outer and an inner cap, as well as a removable paper shield.Two types of pen needles exist, and differ by the way they attach to the insulin pen:A needle that attaches by being screwed onto the penA needle that attaches by being inserted into the pen, called CLICKThe injection of insulin should be carried out as follows:Remove the cover of the pen.Use a clean pen needle and remove the paper film covering needle.Attach the needle to the pen by screwing it/inserting it into the pen, according to the needle type.Remove the outer and inner caps of the needle.Ensure that the pen is functioning properly by dialing up a dose of 2 units on the pen. The pen should be held with the needle facing upwards; press the button on the back to inject. You should see drops of insulin on the tip of the pen needle. If you do not see drops on the end of the needle, then repeat step 5.Dial up the pen until you reach the prescribed insulin dose.If the dial does not turn, then it is likely that the pen/insulin cartridge is damaged.The remaining content of the insulin cartridge can be identified by looking at the level of the plunger inside the insulin barrel.Chose the location where you will be injecting (arms, thighs, legs, abdomen) and insert the needle at a 90-degree angle. Inject slowly by pressing the button on the end of the pen. Count slowly to 10 before removing the needle.Cover the needle with one of the pen-needle covers and unscrew the needle from the pen.Throw the used needle into one of the designated sharps containers.Cap the pen with the insulin pen cover.
