RESEARCH Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Research Projects

Validity of thromboelastography monitoring of coagulation during pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Echocardiographic predictors of patent ductus arteriosus closure in extremely low-birth weight preterm infants.

Evaluation of time to hemostasis with Neptune Pad after pediatric cardiac catheterization: a prospective, randomized study.

Hematology Research Fellowship. This one-year fellowship provided an opportunity to conduct both basic science and clinical research. Projects included recruitment of intensive care patients into a DNA microarray prospective screen for genetic risk factors for thrombosis, a retrospective study of Kawasaki disease at Children’s Hospital of Orange County over the 5-year period 1999-2004, and isolation and characterization of endothelial stem cells from various donor sources.

Diabetes Outreach Program: Brigham & Women’s Clínica Latina. Boston, MA.

Research assistant, summer 1997. This research culminated with guidelines for implementation of a culturally appropriate educational program and support group at the Latino Health Clinic that would empower patients with the skill and motivation to better manage their diabetes. Projects included conducting focus groups with patients, networking with local latino health promotion agencies, performing diabetes screening in the community, and conducting a review of the literature.

I recruited patients to a study designed to measure segmental and total colonic transit time in children using radiopaque markers.

Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. Dr. Andrew Lassar, primary investigator.

Lab technician, 1994-1995. Dr. Lassar’s lab studied muscle development in different models, specifically elucidating the role of transcription factors MyoD, Tin Man, and Sonic Hedgehog. In addition to maintaining the lab’s stock of reagents, I worked on subcloning a gene into an expression vector using restriction endonucleases and the CAT assay reporter enzyme technique.
