Communication of 19.V.1998:

The Post and Telecommunications Agency of Uzbekistan, Tashkent, announces that on 30 September 1998 at 2359 hours UTC (local time: 1 October 1998 at 0459 hours) the country code (ITU-T Recommendation E.164) for Uzbekistan will be changed from “7” to new international telephone country code “998”, for traffic with all Administrations except for those of CIS countries (Commonwealth of Independent States).

Associated with the new country code “998”, the length of the area codes for Uzbekistan will also be changed from three to two digits. The length of the national (significant) number for Uzbekistan will now be nine digits:

The existing dialling format “+7 ABC” to call Uzbekistan will be used in parallel with the new dialling format “+998 BC” during three months (until 1.I.1999).

The existing dialling format “ABC XXXXXXX” from CIS countries (Commonwealth of Independent States) to Uzbekistan will be continued temporarily.
