Moving Checklist

2 months before you move

Create a file or binder: Use this to keep all of your estimates, receipts, and a running inventory of all the items you're moving. Research moving companies: Get each quote in writing. If you're moving to another state, make sure the moving company has a USDOT (U.S. Department of Transportation) number. Start transferring records: Arrange for medical, dental, and school records to be transferred to your new district.

6 weeks before you move

Buy your supplies: Get boxes, bubble wrap, tape, and markers. Start packing: Begin packing items you don't use very often, and label the side of each box with what's inside and what room it belongs in. Start sorting: Sort through the items you don't want to move and decide what you're going to donate, sell, or throw away.

1 month before you move

Choose your moving company: Choose your mover and confirm the date, cost, and destination address. Schedule your utility service changes: Try to overlap connections by a day or two so you have electricity, water, and connectivity in both your old home and your new one. It's easy to get connected at your new home whether you already have AT&T services or you're setting up service for the first time. Submit your change-of-address form: Submit your form either online at or in person at your local post office.

2 weeks before you move

Let folks know you're moving: Notify your bank, your credit card company, and your employer's HR department of your upcoming move and your new address details. Pre-register your internet service: Pre-register at smarthomemgr by downloading the Smart Home Manager app; then select new user. Get ready for your appointment by watching the video at registrationvideo. Prepare your car: Get your car ready for the move by booking it in for service. This applies especially if you're traveling a long way to your new home. Reduce your food supplies: Use up as much food as you can from the freezer and pantry, and consider donating dried goods to a local food bank.

1 week before you move

Review your moving plans: Make sure you have all the correct information and reconfirm the details with your moving company. General packing: Aim to complete the general packing a few days before the move so you have plenty of time to box up any items you've forgotten. Don't forget outdoor toys and equipment. Create an essentials box: For the first few days in your new home, have a box with items including toiletries, a change of clothes, charging cords, a box cutter, and garbage bags.

During the move

Do a final walkthrough: Check for left-behind items. Look behind doors, in cupboards, and outside for anything that might have been missed. Verify the details: Make sure the movers have your new address and cross-check their estimate sheet against your copy. Check and confirm your inventory: Once you've arrived at your new home and everything has been unloaded, confirm your inventory with the movers and sign the bill of lading. Keep a copy for your records.

Moving Checklist

After the move

Find your essentials: Locate and unpack your essentials box.

Prep rooms: Decide which rooms are the most important for you to prepare first. Bathrooms and bedrooms are usually good places to start.

Take a break: Schedule plenty of rest breaks. If you're a DIRECTV customer, you can stream your favorite live channels and DVR recordings directly on your mobile device. Catch up on your shows or take a break with a movie, even if you haven't got around to setting up the TV!
