Japanese for Technical and Business Professions 1 (5 credits)

Autumn Quarter 2012

1. Course outline

This course and the two subsequent courses (HCDE 462 and HCDE 463) constitute the “Japanese for Technical and Business Professions” sequence. In this course, students review and strengthen their basic knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and kanji and apply this to reading authentic materials on technology-related topics. Skills to analyze sentence structures for accurate interpretation are taught. Students also learn functional conversation skills, both verbal and non-verbal, and apply this to technical and business communication situations. Students also learn the cultural concepts underlying these situations.

2. Objectives

- To review and strengthen basic grammar, vocabulary and kanji

- To increase reading accuracy

- To expand vocabulary and kanji

- To develop functional conversation skills in basic technical and business

communication situations

- To understand the cultural concepts underlying these situations

- To become able to control speech levels in these situations

- To become able to make short speeches and reports effectively

No textbook is used. Check the Schedule below to find what materials you need to study before each class and download them from the HCDE 461 Catalyst site. BRING ALL THE NECESSARY MATERIALS TO EACH CLASS.

7. In-class activities

- Reading on general technology-related and social/business-related topics

- Discussion on the content of reading materials

- Lectures on grammar, lexical items, and reading skills

- Grammar drills

- Model dialogue practice

- Role plays and simulation practices (including occasional videotaping)

- Short speech and oral presentation

- Lectures on Japanese society and business culture

- Discussion on current issues in Japan

- Unit quizzes

8. Outside-class activities

- Reading an assigned text before each class

- Doing exercises for sentence structure analysis and translation/interpretation

- Completing study questions

- Doing grammar drills

- Writing assignments using Japanese e-mail

- Practicing model dialogue using Language Partner

- Studying cultural background information

- Reviewing oral performance videos (at HCDE Student Lab)
